Franchise Web Design

One website. Every town on it.

Every town on it

A franchise website has to do two contradictory things: look identical everywhere and feel local everywhere. We design and build sites where head office keeps control of the design system while every location gets a page with its own hours, team, services and booking path — fast on a phone, easy to update, and measured next to enquiries with our analytics team.

FOUR WORKSTREAMS

Four workstreams behind a website that scales.

a website that scales

Franchise web design is four jobs at once: a design system one company can govern, location pages that stay genuinely local, a development setup that adds a new site section in a day, and the speed and user experience that turn a visit into an enquiry.

Speed, accessibility & conversion

A design system, not forty separate websites.

Most franchise brands arrive with a corporate website plus a scattering of franchisee sites built by whoever the owner knew locally. The company looks like several companies, nobody can update a legal notice everywhere at once, and a change of ownership means a website nobody has the password for.

We build one design system — components, templates, typography, imagery rules — that renders every location page automatically and lets the brand ship a change once. Franchisees keep the local fields they should control; head office keeps the parts that carry the trademark.

  • Component library and page templates, documented
  • Local editable fields defined per role
  • Legal, accessibility and trademark elements centrally managed
  • Ownership and access that survive a franchise transfer

One

Design system rendering every location page

A page per location that a neighbour recognises.

The store finder is the most used page on most franchise websites and usually the worst built: a map widget search engines cannot read, no real link to each location, and a page that lists an address and nothing else. That page is where the enquiry either happens or does not.

We build a crawlable finder and a location template carrying hours, team, services, service areas, reviews, photos and a booking path. It has to work on a phone in a car park: more than 60% of local searches happen on mobile, and 76% of people who search locally on a phone visit a business within 24 hours.

  • Crawlable location finder with real links
  • Location template with hours, team, services and proof
  • Local schema, maps and directions handled properly
  • New locations published on opening day

Built so adding a location takes an hour.

Franchise systems grow, split territories and rebrand. A website that needs a developer for every opening becomes the bottleneck, and a website nobody dares touch becomes the reason a company is still running a design from three years ago.

We build on a platform your team can operate — usually Webflow or WordPress, chosen for the way you actually work rather than our preference — with location content in a structured collection, staging for changes, and a migration plan that protects existing search visibility. In a mature local program more than 70% of organic traffic comes from regular organic listings, so protecting those URLs during a redesign is not optional.

  • Location content structured, not hand-built per page
  • Staging, review and rollback for every change
  • Redirect map and search protection during migration
  • Training so your team ships without us

70%+

Fast, usable, and built to be contacted.

Franchise customers arrive impatient: a burst pipe, a car that will not start, a class starting Saturday. If the page takes four seconds and hides the phone number behind a menu, they are already back on the results page.

We design for the contact moment — tap-to-call in reach, hours and service area obvious, booking in as few steps as the operation allows — and we hold the build to real field performance rather than a lab score. Google's own study found that a 0.1 second change in load time lifted conversions by 8% for retail sites and 10% for travel sites.

  • Core Web Vitals measured in the field, monthly
  • Tap-to-call, directions and booking always in reach
  • Accessibility checked against WCAG, not assumed
  • Conversion testing on the templates, not one page

01 — The challenge

The website looks fine. It just does not sell.

Head office is happy with the design. Meanwhile a customer three towns over cannot find opening hours, a franchisee is running a rival site built by a cousin, and nobody can update the same notice across two hundred pages without a developer.

“Every owner wants a change, and nothing ever ships.”

It is a systems problem wearing a design problem's clothes: no component library, location pages built by hand, and a finder search engines cannot read. Speed makes it worse — Google measured an 8% retail conversion lift from a 0.1 second improvement in load time, and franchise sites are usually heavy.

02 — Our approach

Design the system once, then let every location fill it in.

We start with the inventory: every page, every franchisee site on another domain, every template in use, and the jobs each type of visitor is trying to finish. That becomes a structure — what belongs to the company, what belongs to a location, and which fields an owner may edit. Design follows as a component library rather than a set of picture-perfect pages, so a location template, a service page and a careers section all draw from the same parts. Development moves location content into a structured collection on a platform your team can operate, with staging, a redirect map and search protection for the migration. Then we build the experience details that decide whether a visit becomes an enquiry: tap-to-call within reach, service area and hours obvious, booking in as few steps as the business allows, accessibility checked rather than assumed, and performance measured in the field every month. Training and documentation are part of delivery, and the site, the design files and the accounts stay in the company's name.

03 — What we did

Eight weeks to a system, then locations at speed.

Inventory, design system, build and launch — in sequence, with a working session each week and nothing shipped without a rollback path.

Weeks 1-2 / Inventory

What exists, and who owns it

Every page, template and stray franchisee website catalogued, with the traffic and enquiries each one currently earns.

The whole estate on one sheet before a pixel is drawn

Week 3 / Structure

What is central, what is local

Page structure, editable fields per role, and the finder logic agreed with head office and a franchisee in the same room.

Central control and local detail decided field by field

Weeks 4-7 / Design & build

A component library, then the templates

Design system, location template and key pages built on a platform your team can operate, with staging and review from day one.

Components built once, reused in every town

Week 8 / Launch

Migrated without losing visibility

Redirect map, schema, performance and accessibility checks, then launch with monitoring and a rollback plan in place.

Launch day treated as an operation, not an announcement

FAQ

What franchise teams ask us first.

Will a redesign hurt the search visibility we already have?

Not when the migration is planned first, and that is where we start rather than where we finish. Before design begins we map every existing URL to its destination, keep the page structures that already earn traffic, preserve titles and schema, and stage the site so redirects can be tested before launch. Then we monitor daily for the first weeks and fix anything that moves. It matters because more than 70% of organic traffic in a mature local program comes from regular organic listings — visibility worth protecting deliberately.

Should each franchisee get their own website?

Their own page, yes; their own domain, almost never. Separate sites split the authority the company has built, compete with each other for the same local search, and leave nobody able to update the network when something changes. One website with a genuinely local page per location gives owners the visibility and personality they want — their team, their hours, their reviews, their booking link — while the company keeps one asset that compounds and one set of credentials that survives a transfer.

How do you choose a franchise web design agency?

Ask three questions. How will a new location get published — an answer involving a developer is an answer about your future bottleneck. What happens to our existing search visibility during migration? And which parts will franchisees be able to edit? Then ask to see a component library and a field map from real work rather than a portfolio of homepages. The design matters, but the operating model is what you live with for the next five years.

What does a franchise website cost?

A fixed project fee scoped to the number of templates, the number of locations to migrate and how much content needs rebuilding, quoted before anything starts. The design system is the bulk of the investment and it is paid once; locations after that are cheap because they inherit it. Where the honest engagement is a structure and template project on your existing platform rather than a full rebuild, we scope it that way and say so. Design files, code and accounts stay in the company's name.

Which platform do you build on?

Usually Webflow or WordPress, and the choice follows how your team works rather than our preference. Webflow suits marketing teams who want to publish without developers and a design system enforced by structure. WordPress suits companies with existing plugins, integrations or an internal development team. For very large systems with franchise management software in the middle, we will sometimes recommend a headless setup. Whatever we recommend, you get the training and documentation to run it without us.

How do location pages stay unique across hundreds of towns?

Because the template is a frame and the content is local. Each page pulls the real team, hours, service area, services actually sold there, reviews from those customers, photos of that unit, and answers to questions specific to that area. We collect it through a short intake with the owner instead of a merge field, and the template has room for genuinely local sections. Pages built this way read as local to a visitor, which is the same thing search engines are trying to reward.

How fast should a franchise website be?

Fast enough that an impatient person on a phone outside your competitor's door still chooses you. We work to field Core Web Vitals measured on real devices rather than a lab score, keep imagery and third-party scripts under control, and re-check monthly rather than at launch only. The commercial case is well documented: Google's Milliseconds Make Millions study found a 0.1 second load time improvement lifted retail conversions 8% and travel conversions 10%, and franchise traffic is mostly mobile.

Can franchisees edit their own pages?

Yes, within a defined set of fields, and that balance is decided in the structure workshop rather than argued about later. Owners typically control hours, holiday notices, team photos, local offers and their booking link. The company keeps design, legal, trademark elements, service descriptions and page structure. Everyone edits through a simple form-style interface, not a page builder, so nothing breaks visually and no franchisee can accidentally publish a layout the design system does not support.

We are opening twenty locations next year. What happens?

Each one is published from the location template with its own content, usually within a day of receiving the owner's intake form. The launch checklist covers the page, the schema, internal links from regional pages, the finder entry, tracked contact details and the connection to the Google Business Profile. Because the system is built for this, an opening is an operational task for your marketing team rather than a project, which is the whole point of paying for a design system once.

Is accessibility a real requirement for franchise websites?

Yes, and it is one of the few areas where a company's exposure multiplies with location count. We build to WCAG standards — contrast, focus states, keyboard navigation, form labels, alt text rules — test with real assistive technology rather than an automated badge, and document the standard so future pages stay compliant. It also happens to help everyone: clear contrast and obvious tap targets are what make a location page usable in bright sunlight with one hand.

How does the website connect to our booking or CRM system?

Directly, and per location. Most franchise systems already run a booking platform, a call centre or a franchise management system, and the website's job is to route each enquiry to the right unit with the right data attached. We integrate the booking flow, map form submissions and tracked calls to the location, and pass source information through so marketing spend can be judged on booked work. Where an integration is genuinely not worth the engineering, we say so and use a simpler routing rule.

What happens when a location changes owner or closes?

Nothing dramatic, because the page belongs to the territory rather than the person. On a transfer we update the owner, team, hours and any local offers while the URL, reviews and accumulated visibility stay put. On a closure the page is redirected to the nearest serving location or the regional page rather than the homepage, the finder is updated, and internal links are cleaned up. Access is held by the company throughout, so no transition depends on tracking down an old password.

Do you design franchise development sections as well?

Yes, and we keep them separate from the consumer experience because the two audiences want different things. A prospective owner is reading about investment levels, support, territory availability and validation, and they will compare several brands in a tab each. Given an average cost per franchise sale of $13,757 in the 2025 AFDR, a development section that answers questions honestly and loads quickly is one of the cheapest improvements available in the whole recruitment funnel.

Can you work with our existing site instead of rebuilding it?

Often, and we will say so if that is the better use of the budget. Plenty of franchise sites have a sound platform and a reasonable design but no component library, a broken finder and hand-built location pages. In those cases we introduce the structure, rebuild the location template, fix speed and accessibility, and leave the rest alone. It costs less, ships sooner and usually moves enquiries more than a redesign that changes how everything looks and nothing works.

How does the website design affect our SEO and advertising?

More than most companies expect. Search engines read the same structure users do: a crawlable finder, one indexable page per location, clean headings, schema and fast pages are the foundation everything else is built on. Paid media depends on it too — sending advertising clicks to a generic homepage wastes budget that a proper local landing page would convert. We build the site with our franchise SEO and franchise PPC teams so the design decisions and the marketing plan agree.

What does good user experience mean on a franchise site?

That each visitor finishes the job they arrived with, quickly. Customers want hours, distance, price signals and a way to book. Prospective owners want investment detail and validation. Job seekers want the careers page. Existing customers want an account or a phone number. We design each of those journeys explicitly, test them with real users where budget allows, and remove the interruptions — unnecessary pop-ups, long forms, social media widgets that push the phone number below the fold — that get between an interested person and a business.

Do you handle branding as well as web design?

We can, and for many franchise brands the website is where an ageing identity finally shows its age: three logo versions in circulation, no photography standard, and colours that fail contrast checks. Our branding and graphic design teams can refresh the identity and asset library alongside the build, or work purely within the brand guidelines you already have. Either way the design system documents the decisions, so franchisees and future agencies have one source to follow instead of a folder of custom files.
