Franchise SEO

Every store found. The brand intact.

The brand intact

A franchise system does not have one search problem, it has as many as it has locations — plus a corporate site quietly competing with all of them. We build franchise SEO that holds the system together while every local page, every Google Business Profile and every review stream earns its own visibility, and we report the result store by store with our analytics team.

FOUR WORKSTREAMS

Four workstreams behind local search that scales.

search that scales

Franchise SEO is four jobs running at once: a site architecture that lets one brand carry hundreds of locations, local landing pages that are genuinely local, Google Business Profiles and reviews managed at scale, and a corporate content and authority layer that lifts every franchisee underneath it.

Corporate content & authority

One domain, one template, hundreds of locations.

Most franchise brands arrive with the same inheritance: a corporate website, a handful of franchisee microsites on other domains, and a store finder search engines cannot crawl. The brand ends up bidding against its own franchises for the same local search term while none of the pages carry enough authority to win.

We consolidate the system onto one domain with a store page structure that scales, an internal linking model that pushes brand authority down to each city, and a crawlable finder. MarketSnare's multi-location data shows that in a mature local SEO program more than 70% of organic traffic comes from regular organic listings — which is exactly the traffic a broken architecture throws away.

  • Location pages consolidated onto the brand domain
  • Crawlable store finder with real internal links
  • Corporate and franchisee search term conflicts resolved
  • Templates that stay unique as new franchises open

Location pages a neighbour would recognise.

A store page built by find-and-replace reads like one, and Google treats it accordingly. The page that ranks names the suburbs it serves, carries the real team, the real opening hours, the services this franchise actually sells, and proof from customers in that city.

We build a template that scales without going thin, then fill it with local detail collected from the franchisee rather than invented in a spreadsheet. It matters because the demand is immediate: 46% of Google searches carry local intent and 76% of people who run a local search on a phone visit a business within 24 hours.

  • Local search term research per city, not one national list
  • Unique service, team and proof content per store
  • Schema, NAP and geo signals consistent system-wide
  • New locations live with content on opening day

Profiles and reviews managed like a network.

For most franchises the map pack is the shop window, and it is governed by data nobody owns: categories chosen years ago by a franchisee, hours that drift, duplicate listings from a previous owner, photos from the launch party. Reviews are the same story — one store answers every one, another has not replied since 2023.

We take the whole listing estate under management: categories, services, attributes, photos and posts kept current, duplicates and ownership sorted out, and a review programme that asks properly and responds in the brand's voice without sounding automated. Franchisees keep access, corporate keeps the standard.

  • Every Google Business Profile claimed, verified and audited
  • Categories, services and hours standardised across locations
  • Review requests and responses run to one playbook
  • Duplicate and unclaimed listings cleaned up

Listings, photos and posts kept current per location

Authority earned once, spent everywhere.

The corporate site should do the work no franchisee can: rank for the category terms, answer the questions buyers ask before they choose a brand, and earn the links that raise the whole domain. Done well, a new location page opens with authority behind it instead of starting from zero.

That compounding is the commercial argument. Franchise development media is not cheap — the 2025 Annual Franchise Development Report puts the average cost per lead at $271, up from $155 in 2022, with an average cost per sale of $13,757 — so organic visibility that keeps working after the invoice is a rare asset in this industry.

  • Category content on the corporate domain, not scattered blogs
  • Digital PR and partnerships that earn real links
  • Franchise development and consumer search kept separate

01 — The challenge

Corporate ranks. The franchises do not.

The brand looks healthy from head office: strong national rankings, a busy blog, a tidy website. Then a franchisee calls to say nobody in their city can find them, and the map shows a competitor two streets away sitting above them.

“Head office says search is working. My phone says otherwise.”

Usually the same three causes: location pages built by find-and-replace, Google Business Profiles nobody has audited since launch, and franchisee microsites on other domains competing with the brand. The traffic is there to be won — around 50% of organic-derived leads in a mature local program come from organic listings — it is simply landing on somebody else.

02 — Our approach

Fix the architecture, then make every location local.

We start with a full picture of the system: every location, every profile, every domain a franchisee has ever launched, and where the brand and its franchises are competing for the same search term. That becomes a ranked plan by city, with the locations closest to movement first, so franchisees see results early and stay committed to the programme. Next comes the architecture — one domain, a location page template that scales, a crawlable finder, internal links that push brand authority to each city, and schema that says clearly which business is where. Then the local layer: search term research per city, genuinely local content collected from the franchisee, Google Business Profiles standardised on categories and services, and a review programme run to one playbook. Corporate content and authority work runs alongside, so each new location opens with the domain behind it. Everything is reported per location and rolled up for head office, in calls and enquiries rather than rank screenshots, and the working files and accounts stay in the brand's name.

03 — What we did

Six weeks to a working local programme, then a monthly cadence.

Audit, architecture, local build and authority — in sequence, with a monthly working session and a written read on what moved in each city.

Weeks 1-2 / Audit

What the system can and cannot rank for today

Every location page, profile and stray franchisee domain inventoried, with cannibalisation, duplicate listings and the markets already close enough to move.

The whole listing estate on one sheet before anything is rebuilt

Week 3 / Architecture

One domain, one page per city

Location pages consolidated onto the brand domain, the finder made crawlable, and internal linking set so brand authority reaches each city.

A location structure built for demand, not for the org chart

Weeks 4-6 / Local build

Local pages and profiles rebuilt first

Local keyword research, content collected from franchisees, profiles standardised on categories and services, review requests switched on.

Location detail gathered from the people who run the place

Ongoing / Authority

Corporate content and links that lift everyone

Category content and digital PR on the brand domain, reported against the location pages the added authority moved.

Authority earned once at brand level, spent in every city

FAQ

What franchise marketers ask us first.

How long does franchise SEO take to produce enquiries?

Profile and listing fixes can move a market within weeks, because that data feeds the map pack almost immediately. Rebuilt location pages typically take one to two quarters to settle, then keep compounding as the domain gains authority. The useful frame is that organic becomes the steady base underneath paid: in a mature local programme more than 70% of organic traffic and around half of organic-derived leads come from regular organic listings. We publish a per-location read from month one so you can see the trend long before the totals look impressive.

Should franchisees have their own websites?

Almost never their own domains. Separate franchisee sites split the brand's authority, compete with the corporate location page for the same keyword, and leave head office with no control over accuracy when a franchise changes hands. The arrangement that works is one domain with a genuinely local page per market — real team, real services, real proof — plus a Google Business Profile the franchisee helps keep current. Franchisees get the local visibility they want, and the brand keeps one asset that grows instead of forty that do not.

How do you choose a franchise SEO agency?

Ask three questions. What will you measure — an answer about rankings is a report, an answer about calls and enquiries per location is a programme. How will you get content out of franchisees who are busy running shops? And what happens when a location changes owner? Then ask what they would stop doing across the system today. A useful answer arrives with reasoning attached, which tells you more about the next year than any logo wall in a deck.

What does franchise SEO cost?

A fixed monthly fee scoped to the number of locations and how much rebuilding the system needs, quoted before anything starts and separate from media spend. Brands usually fund the architecture, corporate content and authority work centrally, while local page and profile work is scoped per market and often supported by the ad fund. Where the honest engagement is an audit and a location map rather than a retainer, we scope it that way and say so. Accounts, content and profiles stay in the brand's name throughout.

How do you keep hundreds of location pages from looking duplicated?

By treating the template as a frame and the content as local reporting. Each market gets its own keyword research, the suburbs and service areas it genuinely covers, the team who work there, the services this franchise actually sells, local proof and photos, and answers to questions that only matter in that city. We collect that through a short intake with the franchisee rather than a spreadsheet merge, and we keep a review step before publication. Pages built this way read as local because they are.

Who manages the Google Business Profiles, us or the franchisee?

Both, with the brand holding the standard. We recommend corporate owning the location group so ownership survives a franchise transfer, with franchisees keeping manager access for photos, posts and replies. We audit and standardise categories, services, attributes and hours, clear duplicates and unclaimed listings, then hand franchisees a short playbook for the day-to-day. The listing data is one of the highest-leverage assets a franchise system owns, and it should not depend on who happens to run a shop this year.

How does franchise SEO work alongside paid search?

They share market research and should share reporting. Paid tells you within days which local terms convert, which sharpens the organic plan; organic then holds the terms where clicks are expensive. For context, the average cost per lead in Google Ads is now $70.11, so every enquiry organic search carries is a real saving against the ad fund. We run both with our franchise PPC team on one plan and review blended cost per enquiry per market rather than letting each channel claim the same call twice.

What about consumer search versus franchise development search?

They are two audiences and deserve two plans on one domain. Consumer search is local and immediate; development search is national, considered, and read by people comparing investments. Mixing them produces a site that serves neither. We separate the sections, the keyword sets and the reporting, and we keep development content honest because prospective owners will check it. It matters commercially: the average cost per franchise sale reached $13,757 in the 2025 AFDR, so organic development enquiries are worth tracking separately.

A new location opens next month. What happens?

It goes live with content, not a placeholder. Our onboarding kit covers the location page brief, local keyword research, the Google Business Profile creation and verification steps, service area and category choices, opening photos, review requests from the first weeks, and internal links from the brand pages that already have authority. Opening day is when a location has the most local news value and the least competition for its own brand terms, so getting the basics right that month is worth more than a catch-up project a year later.

Do you buy links?

No, and we will decline the request politely. Bought links from networks are the one tactic that can cost a brand its organic visibility outright, and a franchise domain carries hundreds of locations' livelihoods. What we do instead is earn them: original data from the system, local press and community stories from individual markets, partnerships and supplier relationships, and content worth citing on the corporate domain. Slower to start, and it does not evaporate in an update.

How do you get busy franchisees to take part?

By asking for very little and showing results early. The intake is a short form and one call, not a content brief. We sequence the markets closest to movement first so franchisees hear about wins from each other rather than from head office, and the monthly report is a single readable page about their own location. Where a franchisee wants to do more — photos, offers, local sponsorships — the playbook shows them exactly what helps and what does not.

What happens when a location closes or changes hands?

It gets a plan instead of a broken page. A transferred location keeps its page and profile with updated ownership, team and hours, so the reviews and local visibility built up over years stay with the market. A closed location is redirected to the nearest serving location or to the regional page, never to the homepage, its profile is marked closed properly rather than deleted, and internal links are updated. Handled this way, transitions cost the system nothing in search.

How do you measure results when franchisees answer their own phones?

With call tracking per location and honest attribution. Each location page and profile gets its own tracked number that displays consistently, so calls can be counted without breaking the NAP consistency search engines read. Forms, direction requests and click-to-calls are tracked alongside, and the monthly report shows enquiries by market against the local work done. Where a competitor closes or Google changes a layout, we say so rather than take credit — that habit is why brands keep the same reporting view for years.

What about AI search and answer engines?

Same discipline, wider surface. Answer engines lean heavily on the same signals local search does — consistent business data, real reviews, pages that state plainly who serves which area — so a well-run franchise local programme is already most of the work. We add the structured data and entity consistency those systems read, keep the corporate content corroborated and citable, and track brand and location citations through our GEO and AEO work so you can see where the brand is recommended.

Can our in-house marketing team run this with your strategy?

Often the best arrangement, and we scope for it. You get the location map, the page template and briefs, the profile standards, the review playbook and the technical fix list, while we handle the architecture work, schema, authority building and the monthly read. Franchise teams with a strong field marketing manager usually save money that way and get better local content, because nobody knows the franchisees like the person who already calls them every week.

What does a franchise SEO strategy actually include, month to month?

Four things, every month. Technical SEO and site health so the website stays crawlable as new stores are added. Content and on-page optimization for the pages that help customers choose, including the landing pages each franchisee depends on. Local search management: profiles, listings, photos, posts and reviews. And digital authority work — outreach, partnerships and the occasional piece of social or PR support that earns links. The monthly cadence is deliberately boring: high-value fixes first, a working session, and a written note of what improved.

Will SEO help a franchise that already spends heavily on ads?

Yes, and usually by improving what the ads already provide. Paid search buys visibility for as long as the invoice is paid; SEO builds an online asset that keeps producing enquiries between campaigns and lowers blended acquisition cost as organic ranking improves. Most brands we help start with paid carrying the load, then watch the split shift over three or four quarters as organic growth compounds. We never suggest switching off paid while organic is still building — the two work best together, and the reporting should show both.

How do you build trust with customers who have never heard of a local franchise?

With proof that is visible before anyone clicks. Reviews on every profile, answered in a human voice. Photos of the actual premises and team rather than stock imagery. Service and pricing information stated plainly on the website. Local businesses, sponsorships and press that show the store is part of the area. Search engines read those same signals, so the work that increases trust with customers is the work that improves rankings — one of the rare places where marketing and optimization pull in the same direction.

What is the difference between a franchise SEO agency and a local SEO agency?

Scale and governance. A local SEO agency optimises one business in one area and reports on it. A franchise SEO agency has to keep hundreds of stores unique while a single template and a single set of standards holds, manage profile ownership through franchise transfers, keep corporate and franchisee search interests from colliding, and produce reporting that a field manager, a franchisee and a CMO can all read. The digital tactics overlap; the operating model does not.
