Web Design for Car Dealerships

A dealership website built for the phone in the buyer's hand.

for the phone

Two thirds of the people looking at your stock are standing in a car park holding a phone. Most dealer websites answer them with a heavy template, a photo gallery that will not zoom and a six-field form. We design and build the site around the three things a shopper actually does — find a vehicle, judge it, and start a conversation — and we make it fast enough that your paid clicks stop dying on arrival.

FOUR WORKSTREAMS

Four things decide whether a dealer website earns.

Four things

A dealer website has one job on a phone: help someone find a vehicle, judge it, and start a conversation. Every design choice either serves that or slows it down.

Platform & ownership

Speed is the design decision nobody puts in the mockup.

The 2026 automotive mobile speed study, built from roughly 90,000 organic results across 250 US markets, found 92% of local dealership domains failing Google's mobile speed requirements and nearly 70% sitting entirely in the poor tier. Meanwhile 68.5% of dealership visits arrive on a phone and convert at 1.9% against 3.8% on desktop. That is not a taste problem, it is a build problem.

We design mobile first and hold a performance budget through the build: compressed car photography, deferred third-party scripts, no carousel that loads forty images before anyone scrolls. Every page layout is tested on a mid-range handset on a weak connection before it ships.

  • Mobile-first templates with a hard performance budget
  • Vehicle photography compressed without going soft
  • Third-party scripts audited and deferred
  • Tested on real handsets, not just a desktop preview

The listing page is the whole store.

Almost every meaningful session ends on a vehicle listing, so that template deserves more attention than the homepage will ever repay. It needs a swipeable gallery that zooms properly, the price and payment stated without a click, the trim and options in plain language, availability that is actually true, and video — CDK reports that shoppers watch around 20 videos before narrowing their choice.

We rebuild search, filtering and the listing page together, because a shopper who cannot filter by payment or body style leaves before they ever see a car you would have sold them.

  • Listing template rebuilt around gallery, price and payment
  • Search and filters that work with one thumb
  • Walkaround video and real photos, not stock renders
  • Accurate availability wired to the feed

Ask for less, and more people finish.

The standard dealer form asks for six fields to answer one question. We design a lead path with a short form, a tracked phone number, working chat, and trade-in and finance tools that a person can complete on a bus. Every submission lands in the CRM with the vehicle attached, so the BDC knows what the enquiry is about before they call back.

It matters because the traffic is expensive either way: a paid automotive lead averages $32.79, and with a 44.5% bounce rate typical across dealer websites, friction in the form is the most costly design choice on the whole site.

  • Short forms with the vehicle context carried through
  • Tracked calls and chat that route to a real person
  • Trade-in and payment tools that load fast
  • Every enquiry lands in the CRM correctly attributed

Own the site, whatever it is built on.

Dealer groups arrive on every platform imaginable: a locked OEM-approved vendor site, a WordPress build a nephew made, a website builder chosen in a hurry. We will tell you honestly which of those is holding you back. Often the answer is to keep the inventory system and rebuild the pages around it rather than migrate everything and lose the feed integration.

Whatever we build, you own it: the code, the domain, the analytics and the content, documented so another supplier could pick it up. Search structure is built in from day one with our dealership SEO team, so a new site does not cost you the rankings you already have.

  • Honest platform assessment before any rebuild is proposed
  • Inventory integration kept intact wherever possible
  • Redirects and search structure planned before launch
  • Code, domain and analytics in your name

01 — The challenge

The site looks fine on the GM's laptop.

That is usually where the review happens: a big screen, a fast connection, in the office. On the forecourt, on a three-year-old handset with two bars, the same site takes nine seconds to show a photo of a car parked twenty feet away. The shopper does not complain. They open the other tab.

“Our traffic is fine. People just do not fill anything in.”

That is the whole industry's shape, not one store's bad luck: 92% of dealer domains fail the mobile speed bar and mobile converts at 1.9% against 3.8% on desktop while carrying most of the visits. Fix the page weight, the gallery and the form, and the same traffic starts producing appointments.

02 — Our approach

Design for the listing page first, then everything else.

We start where the money is, not at the homepage. That means a week of watching what actually happens on the current website — session recordings, the searches people run, where the form is abandoned, how slow the listing page is on a real handset — and a plain assessment of whether your platform can be fixed or has to be replaced. Design then runs listing page first, browsing and filtering second, model and service pages third, homepage last, because that is the order the revenue sits in. Everything is built mobile first against a performance budget, with the inventory feed integrated rather than reinvented and redirects planned before launch so hard-won rankings survive the move. After launch we keep testing: gallery, form length, payment display, the trade-in path. You own the code, the domain and the analytics, and we document the build well enough that another agency could take it over tomorrow.

03 — What we did

A build sequenced by revenue, not by sitemap.

Watch, decide the platform, build the listing page, then launch carefully — with a working session every week and a written note of what changed.

FAQ

What dealers ask us first.

Do we need a whole new website, or can the current one be fixed?

We answer that with evidence rather than instinct, and quite often the answer is no. A page clean-up, a rebuilt car listing page, compressed photography and a shorter form will move the numbers on many dealer websites without a migration. A rebuild earns its keep when the platform blocks speed work, cannot support a decent gallery, or will not let you add pages — and given 92% of dealer domains fail Google's mobile speed bar, we always check that before quoting anything.

Can you work with our existing inventory provider and CRM?

Yes, and normally we prefer to. The inventory feed and the CRM are the two integrations that hurt most to rebuild, so we keep them and design around them, mapping the feed fields into the new listing template and testing that every enquiry lands with the right vehicle attached. Where a provider is genuinely the bottleneck we will show you exactly which part is constrained and what it costs, rather than pushing a migration you did not ask for.

How long does a dealership website build take?

Eight to sixteen weeks for most single-rooftop projects, longer for a group with several stores and shared components. The variable is rarely design; it is feed integration, manufacturer approval and how quickly content and photography can be gathered. We sequence by revenue — listing template, search, model and service pages, homepage last — so the valuable parts are finished and tested well before launch day.

What does it cost, and how do we judge the return?

A fixed project fee quoted after the evidence week, with optional aftercare monthly. Judge it on enquiries per thousand sessions and cost per appointment before and after, not on how the homepage looks in a meeting. The arithmetic is usually easy to see: you are already paying around $32.79 for a paid automotive lead, so a listing page and form that convert a fraction better pay for the build out of media you are spending anyway.

Will a new site hurt the rankings we have?

Not when the move is planned properly, and this is the part cheap builds skip. Before launch we crawl the old site, map every URL that has traffic or links to its new home, keep the page structure and titles that already earn, and stage the site for testing. After launch we monitor coverage and rankings daily for a fortnight and fix anything that slips. Our search team is involved from the first week of design, not called in afterwards.

What about website builders like Wix or a WordPress theme?

They can be a sensible choice for a small independent lot with fifty units and no complex feed, and we will say so rather than sell you something larger. Where they struggle is inventory at scale: thousands of listing pages, filtering, live availability and syndication push most builder templates past what they were designed for. We assess the size of your operation first, then recommend the smallest platform that will hold it comfortably for three years.

How important is video and photography on the listing page?

It is the single biggest quality difference between dealer websites. CDK reports shoppers watching around 20 videos before narrowing their choice, and a walkaround shot on a phone by someone who knows the car beats a polished studio render every time. We set a shooting standard your own team can repeat — angles, lighting, what to say in ninety seconds — and build the template so the media loads fast instead of stalling the page.

We are a group with several rooftops. One site or many?

One design system, one build, and a genuine page and profile per store. Shared components mean you pay for the listing page once, while each rooftop keeps its own address, hours, staff, reviews and reporting line so the stores do not compete for the same local searches. Where a group runs very different brands we sometimes keep separate domains, but only when the manufacturer requires it or the audiences genuinely do not overlap.

Can you handle manufacturer brand guidelines and approvals?

Yes, and we plan for the approval calendar rather than discovering it late. We work inside the programme's requirements on logos, disclaimers and imagery, keep an approvals log so nothing is submitted twice, and design the flexible parts of the site — listing template, search, service content — where the rules leave room. When a requirement conflicts with performance we quantify the cost so your marketing team can raise it with the programme.

What happens after launch?

Aftercare is where most of the compounding gain sits. We keep testing the elements that decide enquiries — gallery behaviour, form length, payment display, the trade-in path — and hold the performance budget as new scripts get requested, because a site gets slower one tag at a time. You get a monthly page showing enquiries by template, what we tested, what won, and what we are testing next.

Who writes the content for the model and service pages?

Our writers draft it, your managers correct it, and nothing publishes without someone in the store signing it off. The material comes from a short interview with the people who answer these questions daily — the used manager on trade values, the service manager on what a job involves — so the pages read like your store rather than a manufacturer brochure, and they earn search visibility as well as trust.

Can you run our other channels too?

Yes, and the numbers get more honest when one team holds them. Our dealership SEO, dealership PPC and analytics specialists work from the same plan as the design team, so a new site launches with tracking, structure and campaigns aligned instead of three suppliers blaming each other. Hiring us for the build alone is equally fine.

Want to see what your site does on a real phone?
