Pest Control Creative

Every pest control ad looks the same.

looks the same

A cartoon cockroach, a green tick, a stock family on a lawn. We make the ad creative that gets pest control companies chosen instead of compared — static and video ads, print and door hangers, seasonal offers and the brand behind them. It matters because the media is unforgiving: social leads in this trade close at only 5-10%, so the creative decides whether $22 a lead becomes $220 or $760 a customer.

Stop the scroll without a cartoon bug.

Nobody follows a pest control company for pleasure, so a paid social ad has about a second to earn attention from a homeowner who was not thinking about termites. What works is specific and slightly uncomfortable: the actual sign of an infestation, a real technician, a plain offer, a local name. Generic stock imagery reads as a franchise and gets scrolled past.

The media maths makes creative the main lever. Facebook leads in pest control benchmark at about $22 but close at only 5-10%, giving $220-$760 per acquired customer — a spread that is almost entirely a creative and offer problem. We build variants designed to be tested against each other, not one hero ad defended by opinion.

  • Static ad sets built in testable variants, not one-offs
  • Short vertical video shot with your own technicians
  • Hooks written per pest, per season and per offer
  • Every asset sized and cut for each placement

The channel your competitors abandoned.

A door hanger left after a neighbour's treatment is still one of the highest-converting pieces of advertising in this trade, because proximity is the argument. Same street, same pest, same week. The design job is unglamorous and specific: legible at arm's length, one offer, a phone number a person can read while walking to the door.

It is also where local density pays. 16,565 pest control firms operate in the US and 81.4% of them run just one or two locations, so being visibly present in a handful of neighbourhoods beats being vaguely present across a county. We design print, mailers and vehicle graphics as one recognisable set.

  • Door hangers and flyers designed for one offer, not five
  • Neighbour-targeted mailers tied to completed jobs
  • Vehicle wraps and uniforms treated as advertising space
  • Print files supplied ready for your local printer

Termites in March, rodents in October.

Pest demand is a calendar, not a constant. Termite swarms, mosquito season, the first cold night that sends rodents into attics, and the year-round bed bug fear each need their own creative live before the season, not scrambled together during it.

The swing is large enough to plan a year around: demand can triple between February and June, and in peak season mosquito leads drop to about $30 and rodent leads to about $45. Running one flat message through all four seasons pays full price for the quiet months and misses the cheap ones entirely.

  • A creative calendar built backwards from your region's pest pressure
  • Offers designed to convert a treatment into a recurring plan
  • Commercial campaigns kept separate from residential ones
  • Assets delivered ahead of the season, not during it

You are asking to be let into their home.

Pest control is bought under mild embarrassment and real suspicion. A homeowner is inviting a stranger inside to spray chemicals near children and pets. Every design decision either raises trust or quietly lowers it: named technicians rather than stock models, plain safety language, honest pricing, badges that mean something.

Trust is also what protects the recurring side of the business, and that side is nearly all of it: 85.4% of residential pest control revenue recurs through ongoing service plans. Our graphic design and creative strategy teams build the system once, then keep it consistent everywhere it appears.

01 — The challenge

Interchangeable advertising in a crowded local market.

Open any local pest control advertisement and the pattern repeats: a cartoon cockroach, a shield, a green tick, a family on a lawn who have clearly never seen a termite. When every company looks the same, the homeowner picks on price or on whoever appeared first, and both are expensive ways to be chosen. Category search conversion sits at 7.33%, so most of the traffic anyone buys walks away.

“Cover our logo and the ad could belong to any company in the county.”

The difference shows up in acquisition cost, not applause: the same social lead price of about $22 produces anywhere between $220 and $760 per acquired customer depending on what the ad actually said.

02 — Our approach

Find the real objection, then design against it.

We start by listening rather than sketching. Call recordings, review complaints, the questions technicians answer on every doorstep, and the reasons customers cancel a plan. The genuine objections in this trade are consistent and rarely about price alone: is it safe around my children, will it actually work, and am I being locked into something.

Then we build a creative system rather than a campaign. One brand set that works on a van, a door hanger, a phone screen and a uniform, plus a message structure per pest and per season. Assets are produced in testable variants from the start, because the first ad is never the best one and opinions are a poor substitute for a split test.

Finally we tie it to money. Creative is judged on cost per booked job and cost per plan signup, using the tracking already in place, and the losers get retired without ceremony. Photography and video are shot with your own crew wherever possible, because a real technician in a real street outperforms a stock model in every test we have run.

03 — What we did

Researched, designed, tested, retired.

FAQ

Questions pest control companies ask us

What counts as pest control creative?

Everything a potential customer sees before they decide: static and video ads for paid social and search, landing page imagery, door hangers, flyers and mailers, vehicle graphics, uniforms, and the brand system that keeps them recognisably one company. We treat them as one set rather than as separate jobs, because a homeowner who saw your van on Tuesday should recognise your ad on Thursday.

Why does the creative matter more than the targeting?

Because in this trade the targeting options are broadly the same for everyone and the results are not. Social leads benchmark at about $22 with a 5-10% close rate, producing anywhere between $220 and $760 per acquired customer. Same platform, same audiences, triple the cost. What separates them is which pest was named, which fear was answered and which offer was made.

Do door hangers and print still work?

In pest control they work unusually well, because the argument is proximity: we treated a house on this street this week. It is also one of the few channels a national brand cannot outbid you on. With 16,565 firms competing and 81.4% of them running one or two locations, visible density in a few neighbourhoods beats thin coverage of a county. We design the piece for one offer and supply print-ready files.

Should the ads sell a treatment or a plan?

Lead with the treatment the person searched for, then design the conversion to the plan — that is where the money is. A one-time ticket runs $150-$350 while a three-year plan customer is worth $1,200-$2,100. Creative that opens with a plan sells to nobody in a panic; creative that solves the roach today and explains the plan plainly afterwards sells both.

How do you handle the fear factor without being gross?

Carefully, and with a line we do not cross. Showing the real sign of an infestation earns attention and respect; showing something genuinely disgusting earns a report and a blocked ad account. We test the specific and slightly uncomfortable version against the calm reassuring one, because which wins varies by pest — bed bug creative behaves nothing like mosquito creative.

How seasonal should the creative calendar be?

Very. Demand can triple between February and June, and peak-season mosquito leads fall to about $30 while rodent leads drop to about $45. That means termite creative finished in January, mosquito assets ready before the first warm week and rodent messaging live before the first cold night. We build the calendar backwards from your region's pest pressure and deliver ahead of each window.

Can you use our own technicians in the photography?

We would prefer to, and we will push for it. A real technician beside your own van in a street your customers recognise outperforms stock imagery consistently, and it solves the trust problem that sits under every pest control purchase. One shoot day usually produces enough photography and short video for a year of advertising, and the library is yours outright.

How do you know a piece of creative is working?

By cost per booked job and cost per plan signup, not by likes or internal enthusiasm. Every concept is produced in variants and run against each other with enough budget to be readable, and the losers are retired without argument. Where tracking is not clean enough to answer the question, our conversion tracking team fixes that before we spend on production.

Do we need a rebrand or just new ads?

Frequently just new ads, and we will say so. A rebrand is worth it when the name, mark or vehicle livery is actively working against you — unreadable at distance, confusable with a competitor, or signalling a franchise you are not. Otherwise the faster return is in message and offer, and our graphic design team can tidy the existing system without a reset.

How many ads do we need to test properly?

Enough to have a real comparison and few enough to fund each one readably: usually three to five concepts per season, each in a couple of formats. Beyond that a modest local budget spreads too thin to prove anything. We then refresh the winners before they fatigue rather than after the cost per lead has already climbed.

Can our office produce its own pieces afterwards?

Yes, and we build for it. Templates for social posts, seasonal offers, review graphics and simple flyers are handed over with the brand rules, so your team can produce on-brand pieces without waiting on an agency for a one-line change. We would rather you spend our time on the work that needs a strategist than on resizing an image.

What about commercial accounts, do they need different creative?

Completely different. A restaurant manager facing an inspection is buying discretion, documentation and response time, not reassurance about the family dog. Unmarked vehicle options, compliance paperwork, out-of-hours service and multi-site coverage are the selling points, and they belong in their own campaigns and their own collateral rather than as a line on a residential flyer.

Who will be working on our account?

A named senior creative director, with a designer, a copywriter and a photographer or videographer as the work requires. You will know their names, you can email them directly, and the same person joins your monthly session. The person who wrote the brief is the person who defends the results.

What happens if we stop working with you?

You keep everything. Source files, layered artwork, print files, photography and footage are handed over in your name, with the brand rules documented so any future team can carry on cleanly. There are no long-term lock-ins and no files held hostage, because creative that has to be retained by contract was not worth renewing.

Let's make advertising that looks like you.
