ChatGPT Ads for Gyms and Fitness Studios

Be the gym the assistant recommends.

the assistant recommends

People no longer browse for a gym. They describe themselves — new to lifting, back after an injury, three mornings a week, near this station — and ask an assistant where to go. That reply names two or three clubs. We run ChatGPT advertising and the content behind those answers as one programme, so your studio is one of them. It sits beside our AI search and local SEO work.

Measurement

Measurement

Built around the trial, not around the click.

Advertising inside ChatGPT now reaches a billion weekly users, a fifth of them showing commercial intent, across the US and 31 European markets, and Search Engine Land has documented how the buy is set up in practice. For a club the discipline is deciding what you are actually selling this quarter: a trial, an intro offer, personal training or a specific class block.

We build the campaign around that single ask, capped against a target cost per joined member rather than per enquiry, because a fitness lead that never walks through the door is not worth anything.

  • One clear offer per campaign, not five competing ones
  • Radius matched to how far people really travel to train
  • Budget capped against cost per joined member
  • Account, billing and data in your club's name

Assistants answer the anxious questions first.

The demand pool is enormous: 81 million Americans held a fitness facility membership in 2025, with 26.1% of the population aged six and over now a member. But the questions people ask before joining are personal ones — will I be the least fit person there, is there parking, can I cancel, what happens in the first session.

Most club websites answer none of those, so a model has nothing specific to say about you. We publish the answers plainly: timetable reality, coaching credentials, what an induction involves, contract terms in words a human wrote.

  • Joining, cancelling and freezing explained in plain words
  • Timetable, staffing and peak times published honestly
  • Coach credentials and specialisms made explicit
  • Assistant citations sampled across your catchment

Keeping members is cheaper than replacing them.

Retention is finally moving the right way: industry churn fell to 7.1%, its lowest in a decade, from 10.2% in 2024, while average tenure rose to five years. Even so, the HFA benchmarking report puts the median member retention rate at 66.4%, so a third of members still leave each year.

Acquisition that ignores that is a treadmill. We build the onboarding and review habits into the same programme, because the reviews you earn from happy members are precisely what an assistant quotes back to the next prospect.

  • Review requests built into onboarding, not left to chance
  • First-90-days journey mapped with the front desk
  • Listings, hours and class information kept consistent
  • Real member photography instead of equipment stock

Joined members, not leads.

Fitness is a comparatively cheap place to buy attention: fitness and recreation averages $19.50 cost per lead on Meta against an all-industry average of $27.66. Cheap leads are exactly why so many clubs mistake volume for growth.

We track enquiry to trial to joined member, report cost per joined member and how long those members stay, and say plainly when a channel is filling the pipeline with people who never show up.

  • Enquiry, trial, show-up and join tracked end to end
  • Cost per joined member reported, not cost per lead
  • Assistant referrals separated from classic search
  • One monthly read written for an owner

01 — The challenge

The decision now happens in a private conversation.

Someone decides on a Sunday night that this is the month. They do not open ten tabs. They describe their situation to an assistant — nervous, out of shape, wants a coach, cannot do evenings — and take the recommendation they are given. If your club has nothing published about how a beginner is actually looked after, there is nothing for the model to quote, and it will name the club that does.

“Our January intake is fine. It is March that quietly kills us.”

Both halves of that matter. 81 million Americans hold a membership, but median retention is 66.4%. Winning the recommendation and keeping the member are the same problem, so we treat them as one programme.

02 — Our approach

Answer the nervous questions, then buy the placement.

We start by asking the assistants what someone in your area is told when they describe themselves as a beginner, as a lifter, as a parent with an hour free, as someone coming back from injury. We record who gets named, and what the answer is built from. Almost always the gap is the same: your site sells equipment and price while people are asking about belonging, timetable and whether they can cancel. So we publish that material first — induction, coaching, contract terms, peak times, what the first week feels like — because it is what an assistant can quote and what converts a nervous reader into a trial. Campaigns come after, built around one clear offer, capped against a target cost per joined member and paced weekly against the trials your team can actually host. We measure the whole path: enquiry, trial, show-up, join and how long people stay, because a cheap lead that never arrives is the most expensive thing in this trade. You get the flat months named honestly, and every account stays in your club's name.

03 — What we did

FAQ

What gym owners ask us first.

Is a gym allowed to advertise inside ChatGPT?

Yes, and we confirm the detail before any budget is committed. OpenAI treats financial services, healthcare and medicine, and legal services as restricted categories reviewed case by case, and Search Engine Journal has tracked how those approvals are being applied. A gym selling training and membership sits outside that. What needs care is claim language: weight-loss promises, body transformation guarantees and anything medical. We keep the creative to training, coaching and community, which converts better anyway.

How does the cost compare with Meta ads?

Meta remains cheap for this category: fitness and recreation averages $19.50 per lead against an all-industry $27.66. But cost per lead is the wrong scoreboard for a club, because the expensive failure is the enquiry that never walks in. We set the target from your own cost per joined member and report every channel against it on one page, so the budget moves toward whatever fills the floor rather than whatever fills a spreadsheet.

Will this help with retention or only with new members?

Both, and deliberately so. The same material that persuades a nervous beginner — how induction works, who coaches what, what the first month looks like — is what makes the first ninety days go well, and that is where members are won or lost. Industry churn fell to 7.1% and average tenure rose to five years, which shows the ceiling has moved. We build the onboarding and review habits alongside the campaigns so acquisition is not quietly refilling a leaking bucket.

January works for us. What about the rest of the year?

That is the most common reason clubs call us, and it is a solvable problem. January intake is cheap because intent is everywhere; the rest of the year rewards being the recommended answer for specific people — returning after injury, training around shift work, a first barbell session. Those are steady, unseasonal questions, and almost nobody publishes good answers to them. We pace budget to the seasonal shape and let the answer layer carry the quiet months.

Do we need to redo our website first?

Usually not, which keeps the start simple. The pages that matter here are the ones describing induction, coaching, timetable and terms, and those can be added to almost any site. If your site is genuinely blocking things — unusable on a phone, no way to publish a page, a booking flow that loses people — we say so early, scope it separately and let you decide, rather than folding a rebuild into a marketing invoice. Our web design team is there if you want it.

How do reviews affect what the assistant recommends?

They are the most quotable evidence about a club, so heavily. An assistant reads reviews, listings and your published detail and assembles a recommendation from that. Given median annual retention of 66.4%, most clubs have plenty of happy members and simply never ask them at the right moment. We build the ask into onboarding and into milestone moments, so the flow of recent, specific reviews keeps running without anyone remembering to chase it.

We are a single site competing with a chain. Is that hopeless?

Far from it — this is one of the few channels where being specific beats being big. A chain publishes the same page for two hundred sites; you can publish exactly who coaches Tuesday mornings, what the 6pm crowd is like, which station is a seven-minute walk. That specificity is what a model can quote when someone describes their own situation. Independents usually outperform their size here, provided somebody actually writes the detail.

How long before we see anything?

Campaign numbers arrive within days but only mean something after a few weeks of trials. Movement in how assistants describe you generally shows within one to three months of the answers going live, since these systems re-read sources faster than classic search settles. A stable, unseasonal flow of joins is a six to twelve month proposition, and we agree the leading indicators — trial bookings, show-up rate, citation coverage — in month one.

What does a programme like this cost?

A fixed monthly fee for the work, quoted after the audit rather than off a rate card, plus whatever media budget you approve and pay directly. Most clubs start with the audit and the answer layer, which keeps paying regardless of what any platform does next, then add media once the pages can carry it. We agree a target cost per joined member in month one and report against it, so the spend is easy to defend or easy to pause.

What if OpenAI changes the rules again?

It will, and the plan assumes it. The answers, reviews and proof we build are yours and keep working across every assistant and classic search whatever any one platform decides about advertising. The media side stays deliberately flexible: small tests, monthly commitments, nothing that depends on a single placement type surviving. We read the ad policy pages and changelogs weekly and report what changed and what it means for your club.

Can you run our other channels too?

Yes, and the reporting gets more honest when one team holds it. Our paid social, AI search and analytics specialists work from one plan, so a joined member is attributed once instead of claimed by three suppliers. Hiring us for this channel alone is equally fine — we document the setup and leave every account open in your name.

How much of our time does this take?

An hour a week once it is running, plus a little more at the start. What we need is the knowledge only your team has: who the 6am crowd are, which coach beginners always ask for, what people say in their first week. That detail is what makes the answers quotable and what separates your pages from every other club's. Photos and short clips from the floor help enormously, and phone footage is fine.
