Independent — no paid placement

Editorial vetted methodology

Every agency, brand, and company that appears in a Web Tonic ranking passes an 84-point editorial review. No pay-to-play. No inflated review counts. Just the operators who actually deliver.

In a world of paid rankings, we vet with data.

Why it matters

Most "Top 10" lists are pay-to-play. Ours isn't.

The overwhelming majority of agency "best of" lists you'll find on Google are marketplaces in disguise. Agencies pay to be featured. The rankings correlate with cheque size, not client outcomes.

We built Web Tonic's editorial track for one reason: our own community and clients kept getting burned by lists we knew were bought. So we published our methodology, opened it to public scrutiny, and refuse to accept a single dollar for placement. This page is how we prove it.

Our methodology

Six pillars, eighty-four checks.

Each agency is scored 0–14 on every pillar. We need 84 of 84 to consider a listing — plus zero hard-fails on 11 critical items marked ⚠. Below is what each pillar actually measures.

01
Verified Client Outcomes

Real case studies with baseline metrics, time periods, referenceable clients, and platform-verified results. No cherry-picked KPIs.

02
Independent Reputation

Verified Clutch, G2, Trustpilot and community reputation across 10+ signals. No review-bombing, no scam patterns.

03
Operational Legitimacy

Registered entity, verifiable HQ, LinkedIn footprint, domain age, real founders. Not a rebrand hiding a bad reputation.

04
Service Depth & Specialization

Category represents ≥30% of the agency's book. Real specialists, real certifications, real proprietary frameworks.

05
Portfolio Verification

Client logos correspond to signed engagements. Awards and press are real. Screenshots authentic. No borrowed credibility.

06
Professional Standards

Fast, substantive editorial responses. Clear contract structure, reporting cadence, and a clean regulatory record.

The Contrast

What we refuse to do.

What most "Top 10" lists do
Sell placement to the highest bidder
Publish agencies without ever speaking to a client
Hide the ranking criteria behind a black box
Refresh once a year — or never
Ignore red flags in favour of ad revenue
What we do
Zero paid placement, no exceptions
Reference-check ≥ 1 client per agency
Publish the full 84-check scorecard on this page
Re-audit every list quarterly
Remove any agency that fails a re-audit — publicly

How it works

Our five-step audit process.

01
Shortlist

Editorial identifies candidates via public data, community nominations, and referrals.

02
Document Request

Agency submits case studies, reference contacts, entity docs, and portfolio proof.

03
Scorecard Audit

Two editors independently score all 84 checks. Discrepancies are re-reviewed.

04
Client Reference

We contact at least one client from each shortlisted agency directly.

05
Publish & Re-audit

Approved agencies are ranked. Every listing is re-audited every 90 days.

The editorial team

The humans behind the checks.

Every agency review is signed off by two named editors. No AI-generated rankings. No anonymous authors.

Independence you can audit

Four commitments — on the record.

01
Verified Client Outcomes

Real case studies with baseline metrics, time periods, referenceable clients, and platform-verified results. No cherry-picked KPIs.

02
Independent Reputation

Verified Clutch, G2, Trustpilot and community reputation across 10+ signals. No review-bombing, no scam patterns.

03
Service Depth & Specialization

Category represents ≥30% of the agency's book. Real specialists, real certifications, real proprietary frameworks.

04
Portfolio Verification

Client logos correspond to signed engagements. Awards and press are real. Screenshots authentic. No borrowed credibility.

The full scorecard

All 84 checks. Every pillar.

Expand any pillar to see the exact criteria we score. Items marked ⚠ are hard-fails — a single failure disqualifies regardless of overall score.

Verified Client Outcomes
14 checks
1
Minimum 2 case studies provided directly to Web Tonic editorial team
2
Each case study includes at least one measurable KPI (revenue, CPA, ROAS, ranking, leads, MRR growth, retention lift)
3
Baseline metric provided alongside result metric (before vs. after)
4
Time period explicitly stated (e.g., “Jan–Jun 2025, 6 months”)
5
Client is referenceable — public quote, contact, or view-only platform screenshot
6
Case study is in the same category being ranked (a Meta Ads listing requires Meta case studies, not just paid social in general)
7
Result is plausible for the vertical (no “500× ROAS in 30 days” style claims)
8
Platform screenshots or view-only access provided when the metric is platform-verifiable
9
No copy-pasted or clearly templated testimonials
10
At least one case study is from the last 12 months
11
Case study client size / vertical matches the agency's stated ICP
12
Deliverables in the case study match billed scope (no puffery — no claiming full-funnel work if they only ran ads)
13
Attribution model disclosed (last-click, MTA, platform-attributed, MMM, etc.)
14
No cherry-picked metric that hides overall performance (e.g., citing CTR while omitting a collapsed ROAS)
Independent Reputation

6
Minimum 10 aggregated reviews across all platforms combined

No geographic pattern in reviews inconsistent with the agency's stated client base
10
Negative reviews are acknowledged / responded to by the agency
11
