Personal injury law generative engine optimization budget thumbnail showing 12 percent of digital budgets going to AEO and AI visibility plans from USD 199 a month

No published study says what personal injury firms spend, or should spend, on generative engine optimization. What can be priced is the tooling, from vendors' own dated pricing pages, and the share of digital budget enterprises give AEO, from Conductor's 2026 survey: an average of 12% in 2025.

Key Takeaways

  • Enterprises allocated an average of 12% of digital budgets to AEO in 2025, and 94% plan to increase AEO investment in 2026 (Conductor).
  • 56% of CMOs and digital leaders made a significant or high AEO investment in 2025.
  • Semrush SEO plus AI Search plans list at USD 199, 299 and 549 a month, billed monthly (Oct 2026).
  • Ahrefs Brand Radar AI starts from USD 199 a month; core Ahrefs plans run USD 129 to USD 1,499.
  • Profound lists a free 7-day trial (50 prompts) and custom enterprise pricing only.
  • Of consumers who used AI for a legal question, 28% were directed to contact a lawyer (Clio 2025).
  • No study publishes a personal injury GEO budget, cost per case or AI-citation share.

The budget lines at a glance

A GEO budget breaks into lines a firm can price today and lines it cannot. The table shows which is which; every price is a third-party list price, not a quote for services.

Line one: Semrush AI search plans

The Semrush pricing page (checked October 1, 2026) lists an SEO-only plan at USD 139 a month and three combined SEO plus AI Search tiers: Starter at USD 199, Pro+ at USD 299 and Advanced at USD 549 a month billed monthly, or USD 165.17, 248.17 and 455.67 a month billed annually. The Advanced tier adds daily share-of-voice tracking and API access; extra users start at USD 45 a month. These are list prices for software, not for the work of acting on what the software shows.

Line two: Ahrefs plans and Brand Radar

Ahrefs lists Lite at USD 129, Standard at USD 249, Advanced at USD 449 and Enterprise at USD 1,499 a month (Enterprise requires an annual commitment). Its plans include a small number of tracked AI prompts: 10 on Standard and 20 on Advanced. Brand Radar AI, which researches any brand across what Ahrefs calls 475M+ organic prompts, is sold from USD 199 a month. Firms that only want to track their own prompts can buy custom packages at USD 50, 100 or 250 a month.

Line three: enterprise answer-engine platforms

Not every vendor publishes a number. Profound's pricing page offers a free trial with 50 prompts run daily for 7 days across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, then an Enterprise tier priced as "Custom" with up to 9 answer engines tracked. For a multi-office injury firm, that means the top of the tooling range cannot be benchmarked from public data; any figure has to come from a written quote.

That gap matters for budgeting. A firm comparing a USD 199 tracking seat with an enterprise platform is not comparing like for like: the enterprise tier bundles more answer engines, agent tooling, single sign-on and support, and its price depends on prompt volume and seats. The honest way to budget is to price the published tiers first, run the free trial against the firm's own injury queries, and only then request a quote with a defined prompt count, so the quote can be compared line by line with the public tiers.

Line four: what share of budget enterprises give AEO

Conductor's State of AEO/GEO report surveyed CMOs and digital leaders: enterprises allocated an average of 12% of digital budgets to AEO in 2025, 56% made a significant or high investment, 97% reported a positive impact on the funnel and 94% plan to increase AEO investment in 2026. Respondents are enterprise marketers, not law firms, and the 12% is a survey average, not a recommendation. Applied to a firm, it is a reference point for how large a line AEO has become elsewhere.

Bar chart of Conductor 2026 survey results: 12% average digital budget share to AEO in 2025, 56% significant AEO investment and 94% planning to increase AEO investment in 2026

Worked example: what 12% means at different budgets

The arithmetic below applies Conductor's 12% average to illustrative monthly digital budgets and compares it with a single Semrush Starter seat. It is a calculation, not a benchmark for injury firms, many of which spend most of their budget on paid search and TV.

Monthly digital budget (illustrative)12% AEO shareSemrush AI Starter list priceLeft for content and reputation
USD 10,000USD 1,200USD 199USD 1,001

USD 50,000USD 6,000USD 199USD 5,801
USD 100,000USD 12,000USD 199USD 11,801

Seats: the line firms forget to price

Tool prices on these pages are per account, and most include one user. Semrush lists additional users starting at USD 45 a month. Ahrefs includes one user on Lite, Standard and Advanced and charges USD 40, USD 60 and USD 80 a month per extra user on those tiers, with up to 2, 5 and 10 extra users allowed. A firm where an intake manager, a marketing lead and an outside writer all need access should price the seats, not just the plan. Profound, by contrast, lists unlimited seats on its trial, with enterprise terms on quote.

How mature enterprise AEO programmes already are

Conductor's survey also describes how far enterprise programmes have gone, which helps a firm judge whether it is early or late. 73% of CMOs and digital leaders classify their AEO programmes as advanced or very advanced, and 51% use a fully integrated AEO platform. Read together with the 12% budget share, these figures describe large brands; there is no equivalent survey of law firms, and a two-office injury practice should not assume it needs the same stack.

Why the demand side justifies a line at all

Clio's 2025 Legal Trends Report, announced via PR Newswire in October 2025, found that more than half of consumers have used or would consider using AI to answer a legal question, and that of those who used AI, 28% were directed to contact a lawyer. Clio also says a growing majority of consumers would look for their next lawyer online. The report does not separate personal injury matters, so it shows a channel forming, not the share of injury cases it produces.

How narrow the AI shortlist is for local firms

SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index (350,000+ locations, 2,751 brands) found ChatGPT recommends just 1.2% of brand locations, against a 35.9% average appearance rate in Google's local 3-pack, and that recommended locations averaged 4.3 stars. Law firms are not broken out. For a PI firm with several offices, the practical budget question is whether reviews and listings across every office are strong enough to be among the few names an assistant gives.

The click environment the budget has to work in

SparkToro reports that 68.01% of Google searches ended without a click in the first four months of 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024. Pew Research Center found people who saw an AI summary clicked a result in 8% of visits against 15% without one (March 2025, 900 adults). For injury firms that buy expensive search clicks, fewer organic clicks raise the value of being named inside the answer itself, which is the thing GEO budgets pay to influence.

What a firm does not need to buy

Google's AI features guidance states that "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary," that sites do not need new machine readable files or AI text files, and that no special schema.org structured data is required. That rules out paying for "AI markup" packages as a budget line; the spend belongs in content that answers injury questions, in reviews and listings, and in measurement.

  • Not needed: AI text files, special AIO schema, separate "AI pages".
  • Priced publicly: tracking tools from USD 199 a month.
  • Not priced publicly: enterprise platforms, content production, reputation programmes.

A budgeting checklist for injury firms

  1. Start with one tracking seat at a published list price (from USD 199 a month) before any retainer.
  2. Size the line against your own budget, using Conductor's 12% only as an outside reference.
  3. Ask for written quotes where vendors list "Custom", as Profound does.
  4. Track intake sources: Clio's 28% figure is a signal, your intake log is evidence.
  5. Re-check prices quarterly; every figure here is dated October 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should a personal injury firm budget for GEO?

No study publishes a personal injury GEO budget. Two public anchors exist: Conductor's 2026 survey found enterprises put an average of 12% of digital budgets into AEO in 2025, and vendor list prices put AI visibility tracking at USD 199 a month for Semrush's SEO plus AI Search Starter plan or Ahrefs Brand Radar.

What does AI search tracking software cost in 2026?

On the vendors' own pricing pages in October 2026: Semrush's SEO plus AI Search plans list at USD 199, USD 299 and USD 549 a month billed monthly; Ahrefs lists Lite USD 129, Standard USD 249, Advanced USD 449 and Enterprise USD 1,499 a month, with Brand Radar AI from USD 199; Profound shows a free trial and custom enterprise pricing.

Is there evidence injury clients use AI before hiring a lawyer?

Clio's 2025 Legal Trends Report, announced in October 2025, says more than half of consumers have used or would consider using AI to answer a legal question, and that 28% of those who used AI were directed to contact a lawyer. It does not break out personal injury.

Do law firms need special code or files to appear in AI Overviews?

Google says no: there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no AI text files or special schema.org markup are needed. Budget goes to content, reputation and measurement rather than to technical add-ons.
