Franchise AEO vs SEO thumbnail showing ChatGPT recommending 1.2 percent of brand locations against 35.9 percent appearing in Google's local 3-pack

On named data, SEO still carries franchise discovery and AEO is the narrower, harder layer: SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index found brands in Google's 3-pack 35.9% of the time, while ChatGPT recommended 1.2% of locations. No study publishes a franchise-only AEO cut, so this page compares the two channels using multi-location and cross-industry figures, each named.

Key Takeaways

  • SOCi analysed more than 350,000 locations across 2,751 multi-location brands.
  • Brands appeared in Google's local 3-pack 35.9% of the time.
  • ChatGPT recommended 1.2% of locations, Gemini 11.0% and Perplexity 7.4%.
  • Google Maps supplied 32.5% of AI citations for local queries (SOCi 2026).
  • AI referrals were 1.08% of website traffic across 10 industries (Conductor 2026).
  • Users clicked a result in 8% of visits with an AI summary vs 15% without (Pew, March 2025).
  • Only about 17% of AI Overview citations also rank in the organic top 10 (BrightEdge).
  • Franchise marketers put 42% of budgets into digital ads in 2025 (AFMR).

AEO vs SEO for Franchises: The Side-by-Side

Each row compares one measurable outcome across the two channels. The SEO column is traditional Google search, the AEO column AI assistants and AI Overviews. Where a franchise-specific figure does not exist, the scope column says so.

Local Visibility: 3-Pack Versus AI Recommendations

SOCi's LVI is the only large dataset that measures both channels on the same locations. Against a 35.9% average 3-pack appearance rate, ChatGPT recommended 1.2%, Perplexity 7.4% and Gemini 11.0%. SOCi describes AI visibility as "nearly 30 times more selective than traditional local search", and its franchise benchmark post puts the range at 3 to 30 times depending on the platform. Gemini, which SOCi says draws on Google Business Profile data, is the least selective of the three.

The Shared Foundation: Listings Feed Both Channels

The SEO-versus-AEO framing breaks down at the data layer. SOCi found Google Maps accounted for 32.5% of AI citations in local query results, niche directories 26.3%, brand websites 23.1%, Yelp 10.5% and Facebook 7.6%. Every one is a listing platform or a page built on listing data. SOCi's Google benchmarks for the same brands were 97.9% of locations claimed and 86.6% profile completeness, with only 2.7% of local pages reaching page one.

Traffic Contrast: AI Referrals Against Organic

Conductor's 2026 benchmarks found AI referrals made up 1.08% of website traffic across ten industries, about one visit in 100, growing around 1% month over month, with ChatGPT supplying 87.4%. Organic search remained "a key traffic pillar", at 42.4% in Health Care, 39.6% in Communication Services and 33.8% in Industrials. Conductor does not report a franchise or restaurant cut, so these are sector proxies.

The ratio is the point for a franchise budget meeting. Even in Industrials, the lowest of the three organic figures Conductor highlights, organic search delivered roughly 31 times the cross-industry AI referral share. AI referrals are growing, and Conductor notes they are rising every month in 4 of its 10 industries, but on 2026 data they are a supplement to organic traffic for multi-location brands, not a substitute. A franchise that cuts SEO work to fund AEO would be moving effort from the larger channel to the smaller one, unless its own analytics show otherwise.

Click Contrast: What Happens When an AI Summary Appears

Pew Research Center observed 900 US adults in March 2025: those who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits versus 15% for those who did not, and clicked a link inside the summary in 1%. Ahrefs measured a 58% lower top-result CTR when an AI Overview appeared, using December 2025 data on 300,000 keywords. SparkToro reports 68.01% of Google searches ended without a click in early 2026, versus 60.45% in 2024 (different panels: Similarweb and Datos).

BrightEdge reports that AI Overview presence rose from roughly 30% to 48% of tracked queries over a year, and that only about 17% of AIO citations also rank in the organic top 10. For franchise location pages, a strong ranking is not proof of AI inclusion, which is why the two need separate reporting even though they share inputs.

Where Franchise Marketing Budgets Sit Today

The 2025 Annual Franchise Marketing Report (AFMR) shows digital ads at 42% of total franchise marketing budgets, social media 22%, websites 12%, print and PR 8% each, and broadcast and streaming 7% each. Within digital, 36% went to search engine PPC and 29% to social media advertising, and 85% of respondents recommend or require franchisees to invest in local marketing. The report has no AEO or GEO line, so any franchise AEO budget share would be a guess.

Category Benchmarks: Where Franchise Leaders Beat Both Averages

The same SOCi post breaks the LVI into categories that are heavily franchised, and names leaders. In retail the average was 92.4% of profiles claimed, 86.4% completeness and 49.5% 3-pack visibility, with a Gemini recommendation benchmark of 18.3%. Batteries Plus Bulbs reached 99.1% claimed, 99.1% complete and 92.3% 3-pack visibility, alongside a 38.4% Gemini rate. In restaurants the category averaged 96.5% claimed and 94.2% complete; Culver's, at 100% on both and 57.7% 3-pack visibility, was recommended by ChatGPT 30.0% of the time and by Gemini 45.8%, against category averages of 5.3% and 7.1%. In financial services, Liberty Tax reached 68.3% 3-pack visibility and a 26.9% Perplexity rate against a 9.9% category benchmark.

These are single-brand results from a vendor study, so they show what is possible rather than what is typical. They also show the two channels moving together: in each named case the brand with the strongest Google listings also held the highest AI recommendation rate. SOCi's data shows correlation, not proof that one causes the other.

Who Owns Each Channel in a Franchise System

The contrast also has an organisational side. Traditional local SEO is often split: the franchisor controls the brand site and location page template, while franchisees answer reviews and update hours. The AFMR found 85% of franchise marketers recommend or require local marketing investment by franchisees, which places part of the listing work in hundreds of hands. Because AI engines lean on those same listings, inconsistent franchisee data affects both channels at once. SOCi's accuracy figures show the gap: ChatGPT and Perplexity drew on profiles that were only about two-thirds accurate in its sample, while Gemini's Google-sourced profiles were 100.0% accurate. Central listing governance is the single control point that serves SEO and AEO together.

Compliance: AI Answers and the Franchise Rule

AI engines summarise what franchisors publish, including recruitment pages. The FTC Franchise Rule, 16 CFR 436 defines a financial performance representation as "any representation, including any oral, written, or visual representation, to a prospective franchisee, including a representation in the general media". Such figures belong in Item 19 of the disclosure document. Earnings claims on franchise-development pages that AI engines may quote should match Item 19 word for word.

Google's AI features guidance states that "there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." For Google's AI layer, AEO and SEO are the same work. For ChatGPT and Perplexity, SOCi's citation-source data points to the same listing and website inputs.

A Franchise Scorecard for Both Channels

  • Report 3-pack share and AI recommendation rate side by side; SOCi's averages are 35.9% and 1.2-11.0%.
  • Audit listing accuracy first; ChatGPT and Perplexity profiles were 68.3% and 68.0% accurate in SOCi's sample.
  • Treat location pages as AI sources too, since brand websites supplied 23.1% of local AI citations.
  • Segment AI referrers in analytics and compare against the 1.08% cross-industry share.
  • Align franchise-development copy with Item 19 before AI engines summarise it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AEO replacing SEO for franchise brands?

Not on the published numbers. In SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index, multi-location brands appeared in Google's local 3-pack 35.9% of the time but were recommended by ChatGPT for 1.2% of locations. Conductor measured AI referrals at 1.08% of website traffic across 10 industries. Search still carries far more visibility and traffic.

What share of franchise locations do AI assistants recommend?

SOCi's 2026 LVI, covering more than 350,000 locations of 2,751 multi-location brands, found ChatGPT recommended 1.2%, Gemini 11.0% and Perplexity 7.4%. The study covers multi-location brands overall; it does not publish a franchise-only cut.

Where do AI engines get local business information?

SOCi found Google Maps supplied 32.5% of AI citations for local queries, niche directories 26.3%, brand websites 23.1%, Yelp 10.5% and Facebook 7.6%. Listing data feeds both local SEO and AI answers.

Can a franchisor let AI answers state franchisee earnings?

The FTC Franchise Rule (16 CFR 436) defines a financial performance representation as any oral, written or visual representation to a prospective franchisee, including in the general media, and requires it to be in Item 19 of the disclosure document. Keep earnings claims on your own pages consistent with Item 19.

How much do clicks fall when an AI summary appears?

Pew Research Center found users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without, in March 2025. Ahrefs measured a 58% lower top-result CTR with an AI Overview on December 2025 data.
