Pest control generative engine optimization statistics thumbnail showing only about 17 percent of AI Overview citations also rank in the organic top ten, per BrightEdge

No dataset tracks AI citations for pest control specifically, but cross-industry citation studies show where AI answers take their sources, and it is mostly not page one. BrightEdge finds only about 17% of AI Overview citations also rank in the organic top 10, and Yext traces 86% of local AI citations to websites, listings and reviews that brands control.

Key Takeaways

  • Only about 17% of AI Overview citations also rank in Google's organic top 10 (BrightEdge).
  • AI Overview presence grew from roughly 30% to 48% of tracked queries in a year, a 58% increase.
  • 86% of local AI citations come from brand-managed sources (Yext, 6.8 million citations, 2025).
  • First-party websites supplied 44% of citations, listings 42%, forums just 2%.
  • Gemini favours websites at 52.1%; OpenAI leans on listings at 48.7%.
  • US pest control revenue reached USD 13.416 billion in 2025, up 6% (NPMA).

Page-one rank and AI citation are different lists

BrightEdge's one-year review of AI Overviews states that "only about 17% of sources cited in AIOs also rank in the organic top 10 - and that number has been flat for months", meaning roughly 5 out of 6 citations come from content that is not on page one. Monthly overlap ran between about 16.1% and 16.9% from February to July 2025, while the share of cited sources ranking somewhere in the top 100 rose from about 48.7% to 53.1%. For a pest control firm, that means a page ranking eighth for "termite inspection cost" is not guaranteed a citation, and a deep FAQ page ranking 40th might get one.

How much of search an AI Overview now covers

BrightEdge reports AIO presence grew "from roughly 30% to 48% of tracked queries over the past year - a 58% increase", that Overviews now average over 1,200 pixels tall, and that approximately 52% of queries still trigger no AI Overview at all. Pest searches split along that line: an identification question ("what do carpenter ant droppings look like") is the informational type that tends to draw a summary, while "exterminator near me" is still largely a local pack.

Pew's July 2025 study of 900 US adults' browsing in March 2025 shows what those summaries look like when they do appear. Some 18% of all Google searches in the sample produced an AI summary, and 88% of those summaries cited three or more sources, while only 1% cited a single source. The median summary was 67 words long, ranging from 7 to 369 words. In other words, a pest control page that earns a citation usually shares the box with at least two other sources, so being one of several cited pages is the realistic goal, not being the answer.

Where local AI answers take their sources

Yext analysed 6.8 million AI citations from 1.6 million queries per model across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity between July 1 and August 31, 2025, using location-specific prompts. First-party websites generated 2.9 million citations (44%), listings 2.9 million (42%) and reviews and social 545,000 (8%). Reddit and similar forums accounted for just 2% of citations once location context and query intent were applied, which undercuts advice that a pest firm must be active on forums to be cited.

Each assistant reads a different source

The same Yext release reports that Gemini favours websites (52.1% of its citations), OpenAI leans on listings (48.7%), and Perplexity diversifies across sources such as MapQuest and TripAdvisor. For unbranded objective queries, often the most discoverable kind, first-party websites and local pages made up nearly 60% of citations; branded or subjective queries leaned more on listings and reviews. A "best termite company in Tampa" prompt is subjective, so reviews and listings matter more there than on a "how long does a termite treatment last" prompt.

Other verticals show the range

Yext did not publish home services, but its vertical split shows how much the mix moves: in retail 47.6% of citations came from first-party websites, in finance 48.2% were brand-owned sites, healthcare relied on listings for 52.6%, and food service had the highest reviews and social share at 13.3%. Pest control, a regulated local service with high review volume, plausibly sits between healthcare and food service, but that is an inference, not a measurement.

Being named, not only cited

Citation is one step; recommendation is the next. SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index of about 350,000 locations found ChatGPT recommended 1.2% of brand locations, Gemini 11.0% and Perplexity 7.4%, against 35.9% presence in Google's local 3-pack. Multi-location operators such as the national pest brands are the population that study measured.

The method matters when reading those numbers. SOCi asked each platform the same standardized prompt, "Can you recommend businesses of X type in Y market?", for every audited location, requested ten businesses and counted the brand only if it appeared in the first five. The average brand in the index was represented by about 67 locations, and across the three AI platforms brand locations appeared in recommendations 6.5% of the time. SOCi notes that AI answers are probabilistic, so the same question can return different businesses on repeat runs; a single manual check of "best pest control near me" says little about a branch's real visibility. Tracking the same prompt per city over several weeks is the only way to see a trend.

The pest control market behind the queries

NPMA reports US structural pest control service revenue of USD 13.416 billion in 2025, a 6% increase from 2024's USD 12.654 billion and more than 2.7 times real GDP growth. There were 16,565 firms and an estimated 109,384 service technicians, with 81.4% of firms running one or two locations. At the top, Rollins reported fourth-quarter 2025 revenue of USD 913 million, up 9.7% (organic 5.7%, acquisitions 4.0%), and full-year revenue of about USD 3.76 billion, up 11.0%. A market this fragmented means most firms compete for citations against a few national brands with large content libraries.

Clicks that survive the summary

Citation matters because clicks are thinner. Ahrefs found an AI Overview correlated with a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page in December 2025 data (34.5% in April 2025), and Pew recorded result clicks on 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without. SparkToro puts zero-click Google searches at 68.01% in January-April 2026. Google's AI features guidance says no special optimization is needed to appear, so the practical levers remain the website and listing assets Yext counted.

Turning citation data into a pest control plan

  1. Write one page per pest and treatment: unbranded objective queries drew nearly 60% of citations from first-party pages.
  2. Treat listings as half the job; they carried 42% of citations and 48.7% of OpenAI's.
  3. Do not judge by rank alone; only about 17% of cited sources sit in the top 10.
  4. Deprioritise forum seeding, which drew 2% of local citations.
  5. Track prompts by city and season, since recommendation rates (1.2% on ChatGPT) are measured per location.

What the data cannot tell a pest control firm

No study we opened publishes a pest control AI citation share, a GEO cost per lead or an AEO click-through rate for pest queries. Conductor's 2026 sector benchmarks use GICS sectors with no home-services sector, so we do not map pest control to one. Every figure above other than NPMA and Rollins is cross-industry or from another vertical.

That gap is worth stating to any vendor pitch. A pest firm can measure its own citation rate by logging a fixed set of prompts per branch each month and counting how often its domain or listing is cited, then comparing that with branch call volume. Until an issuer publishes a sector cut, that first-party log is the only pest control benchmark that will exist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ranking first on Google get a pest control page cited in AI Overviews?

Not reliably. BrightEdge reports that only about 17% of sources cited in AI Overviews also rank in the organic top 10, a share that stayed roughly flat across its tracking period. Its data is cross-industry; no pest-control cut is published.

Which sources do ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity cite for local businesses?

Yext's analysis of 6.8 million AI citations from July-August 2025 found first-party websites produced 44% of citations, listings 42%, reviews and social 8%, and Reddit and similar forums 2% once location and intent were applied.

Is there an AI citation benchmark for pest control companies?

No. Neither Yext, BrightEdge, Conductor nor SOCi publishes a pest-control row on the pages we opened. The figures here are cross-industry or from other verticals and are labelled that way.

How big is the US pest control market AI answers are steering?

NPMA reports structural pest control service revenue of USD 13.416 billion in 2025, up 6% from USD 12.654 billion, across 16,565 firms, 81.4% of which run one or two locations.

Should a pest control company post on Reddit to get cited by AI?

The citation data does not support making it a priority. In Yext's 2025 study, Reddit and similar forums accounted for 2% of local AI citations once location and query intent were applied, against 44% for first-party websites and 42% for listings. Google also says no special optimization or markup is needed to appear in AI Overviews, so service pages and listings come first.
