For HVAC contractors the GEO vs SEO gap is still wide: Google's local 3-Pack shows brand locations 35.9% of the time, while ChatGPT recommends 1.2% of them. No study publishes an HVAC-only AI search figure, so this page compares the two channels with SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index, Pew, Statcounter and EIA data, each labelled with its real scope.
Key Takeaways
- Google 3-Pack appearance: 35.9% of brand locations; ChatGPT recommendations: 1.2% (SOCi, vendor).
- Gemini recommends 11.0% of locations, Perplexity 7.4%.
- In the US, ChatGPT sends 75.17% of AI chatbot referrals; Gemini 13.26% (Statcounter, Sept 2026).
- With an AI summary, users clicked a result on 8% of visits vs 15% without (Pew, March 2025).
- 88% of US households use air conditioning (EIA RECS 2020).
- AC install and repair search leads cost USD 127.74; heating and furnaces USD 129.02 (LocaliQ 2025).
- US zero-click Google searches reached 68.01% in Jan-Apr 2026 (SparkToro).
- Google's review share among consumers fell from 83% to 71% in a year (BrightLocal 2026).
HVAC visibility gap at a glance
The table sets the best published figure for each channel side by side. "Not published" means exactly that: no issuer we could open measures that metric for heating and cooling contractors.

Why no HVAC-specific GEO number exists
The large AI-search benchmarks are built on sector taxonomies that do not isolate trades. Conductor's 2026 AEO/GEO benchmarks cover ten sectors, from Health Care to Utilities, and report AI referrals at 1.08% of website traffic overall. Utilities, the closest-sounding sector, saw AI Overviews on 25.4% of searches but only 0.35% of traffic from AI referrals, yet it describes power and gas providers, not contractors who install furnaces. We therefore do not apply it to HVAC. The honest position: HVAC companies have to measure their own AI referrals and recommendations. In practice that means three numbers from first-party data: sessions referred by chatbots in analytics, calls and form fills from those sessions, and a monthly manual check of whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity name the business for its main service and city prompts. Those three readings, repeated over time, will say more about HVAC GEO than any borrowed sector average, and they cost nothing beyond setup time.
| Conductor sector (2026) | Searches with AI Overview | AI referral share of traffic | Maps to HVAC? |
|---|---|---|---|
| All ten sectors | 25.11% | 1.08% | Context only |
| Health Care | 48.75% | Not quoted here | No |
| Utilities | 25.4% | 0.35% | No: energy providers, not contractors |
| Information Technology | Not quoted here | 2.80% | No |
| Building services / trades | No sector | No sector | Not published |
Local AI recommendations versus the 3-Pack
SOCi analyzed more than 350,000 locations across 2,751 multi-location brands, which makes it the best proxy for franchised and multi-branch HVAC operators. ChatGPT recommends just 1.2% of brand locations, against an average 35.9% appearance rate in Google's local 3-Pack, a gap SOCi calls nearly 30 times more selective. Gemini recommended 11.0% and Perplexity 7.4%. Locations ChatGPT recommended averaged 4.3-star ratings, and SOCi notes AI assistants synthesize Google Maps, Yelp, Facebook and brand-website signals. For a single-shop contractor these are directional, since the sample is multi-location brands.
Which assistants send US visitors
If an HVAC company tracks one AI source, the referral data says it should be ChatGPT, with Gemini second. Statcounter's US AI chatbot market share for September 2026 shows ChatGPT at 75.17%, Google Gemini at 13.26%, Microsoft Copilot at 6.64%, Perplexity at 3.02% and Claude at 1.81%. Worldwide, Statcounter reported ChatGPT's share fell to 76.85% in April 2026 from 84.21% a year earlier, so the field is widening. Note the inversion with SOCi: Gemini sends far fewer visits than ChatGPT but recommends far more local locations.

| AI chatbot | US referral share, Sept 2026 | Local locations recommended (SOCi) |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 75.17% | 1.2% |
| Google Gemini | 13.26% | 11.0% |
| Microsoft Copilot | 6.64% | Not measured |
| Perplexity | 3.02% | 7.4% |
| Claude | 1.81% | Not measured |
How searchers behave when an AI summary appears
Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025. When Google showed an AI summary, users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits, against 15% when no summary appeared; they clicked a link inside the summary on just 1% of visits, and ended their browsing session 26% of the time versus 16%. Around 18% of searches that month produced a summary. Pew does not split by query type or industry, so treat the gap as a general signal rather than an HVAC measurement.

The demand base: nearly every home is cooled
The market size explains why HVAC search is competitive in either channel. According to the EIA's 2020 Residential Energy Consumption Survey, 88% of US households use air conditioning, and two-thirds use central AC or a central heat pump as their main equipment. Usage reaches 92% in the Midwest and 93% in the South, against 73% in the West, and 93% of homes built between 2010 and 2020 use AC, against 83% of homes built before 1950. In the marine climate along the Pacific Coast, residential AC use was only 49%, and half of Northeast households rely mainly on individual units such as window units and mini-splits. Those regional splits matter for content: the questions a homeowner asks an assistant in Phoenix and in Boston are different, and pages that answer the local version are the ones with a chance of being cited.
| EIA RECS 2020 measure | Value |
|---|---|
| US households using air conditioning | 88% |
| Main AC is central AC or central heat pump | Two-thirds |
| South Census Region AC use | 93% |
| Midwest Census Region AC use | 92% |
| West Census Region AC use | 73% |
| Northeast households mainly using individual units | 50% |
Paid search: the only HVAC lead-cost benchmark
No GEO cost per lead exists for HVAC, so lead economics come from paid search, labelled as a comparator. LocaliQ's 2025 home services benchmarks show air conditioning installation and repair at a 6.43% CTR, USD 9.68 per click, 6.56% conversion rate and USD 127.74 per lead. Heating and furnaces ran at a 5.97% CTR, USD 9.30 per click, 7.48% conversion and USD 129.02 per lead. The home services average was USD 90.92.
| Paid search, 2025 | AC install and repair | Heating and furnaces | Home services average |
|---|---|---|---|
| Click-through rate | 6.43% | 5.97% | 6.37% |
| Cost per click | USD 9.68 | USD 9.30 | USD 7.85 |
| Conversion rate | 6.56% | 7.48% | 7.33% |
| Cost per lead | USD 127.74 | USD 129.02 | USD 90.92 |
Organic clicks keep thinning
On SparkToro's clickstream panel, 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click in the first four months of 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024. Ahrefs found an AI Overview now correlates with about 58% lower position-one CTR on December 2025 data, up from 34.5% in April 2025. Both are cross-industry. They argue for measuring calls and map actions, not just sessions, when judging HVAC SEO.
The overlap with paid search is growing as well. Semrush analyzed more than 600,000 keywords from its US desktop database between November 2025 and April 2026 and found AI Overviews on commercial-intent results grew 71%, while transactional-intent appearances fell 5%. Results showing both Google Ads and an AI Overview appeared roughly twice as often as a year earlier, and keywords with an overview carried a higher average cost per click in most industries. For an HVAC company bidding on "heat pump installation" style terms, that means the paid ad, the overview and the local pack may now share one screen, and each needs to be measured separately.
| Organic click signal | Earlier | Later | Issuer |
|---|---|---|---|
| US Google searches without a click | 60.45% (2024) | 68.01% (Jan-Apr 2026) | SparkToro |
| Position-one CTR gap with AI Overview | -34.5% (Apr 2025) | ~-58% (Dec 2025 data) | Ahrefs |
| AIO on commercial-intent results | Baseline Nov 2025 | +71% by Apr 2026 | Semrush |
| AIO on transactional-intent results | Baseline Nov 2025 | -5% by Apr 2026 | Semrush |
Reviews: the shared currency
Review data links both channels: SOCi ties ChatGPT picks to a 4.3-star average, and the 3-Pack has long weighted reviews. BrightLocal's 2026 consumer review survey shows consumers spreading their attention: Google's share as a review source fell from 83% in 2025 to 71%, with consumers using an average of six review sites. Thresholds are also rising: 68% will only use a business with four or more stars, up from 55% in 2025, 47% will not use one with fewer than 20 reviews, and 89% expect owners to respond. For HVAC, that argues for consistent profiles beyond Google, the same multi-source signals SOCi says AI assistants synthesize.
What Google requires for AI features
Google Search Central states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary, and that sites do not need new machine readable files, AI text files or markup. Its fundamentals include allowing crawling and keeping Business Profile information up to date, which for HVAC means accurate service areas, hours and emergency availability.

An HVAC playbook drawn from the numbers
- Defend the 3-Pack first: 35.9% visibility beats any AI recommendation rate measured.
- Watch Gemini for local picks: 11.0% of locations recommended, nine times ChatGPT's 1.2%.
- Track ChatGPT referrals, which make up 75.17% of US AI chatbot referrals.
- Count calls, not sessions, as zero-click reached 68.01% in 2026.
- Spread review effort beyond Google, whose review-source share fell to 71%.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there HVAC-specific data on AI search visibility?
No. We found no study that publishes AI-citation share, AEO click-through or GEO lead cost for HVAC contractors. Conductor's 2026 benchmarks cover ten broad sectors without a building-services cut, so this page uses cross-industry and local-business datasets and labels them as such.
Which AI assistant matters most for an HVAC company in the US?
By referrals, ChatGPT. Statcounter's US data for September 2026 puts ChatGPT at 75.17% of AI chatbot referrals, Google Gemini at 13.26%, Microsoft Copilot at 6.64% and Perplexity at 3.02%. For local recommendations, SOCi found Gemini recommends 11.0% of brand locations versus 1.2% for ChatGPT.
Do AI summaries stop people clicking through to contractor websites?
They correlate with fewer clicks. Pew Research Center found that in March 2025 users clicked a traditional search result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared versus 15% without one, and ended their browsing session 26% of the time versus 16%. The study is not HVAC-specific.
What does an HVAC lead cost from paid search?
As a paid-search comparator, LocaliQ's 2025 home services benchmarks put air conditioning installation and repair at USD 127.74 per lead and heating and furnaces at USD 129.02. GEO has no published HVAC cost per lead.
Should an HVAC company stop investing in SEO for GEO?
Nothing in the data supports that. Google says SEO best practices remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode with no special optimizations required, and the local 3-Pack still shows brand locations 35.9% of the time in SOCi's study versus 1.2% for ChatGPT recommendations.
