Software is the sector where AI engines already send the most visitors: Conductor's 2026 AEO/GEO benchmarks put AI referrals at 2.8% of IT-sector traffic, against 1.08% across ten industries. No study cuts citation or CTR rates for B2B SaaS alone, so this page pairs that IT proxy with cross-industry visibility, citation and click-through data, each labelled by source and date.
Key Takeaways
- Information Technology drew 2.8% of its site traffic from AI referrals (Conductor 2026).

B2B SaaS AEO Benchmarks at a Glance
The table separates figures measured on the IT sector from cross-industry figures. A SaaS team should read the first group as its closest published benchmark and the second as the search environment every sector shares.

|---|---|---|---|
| AI referral share of site traffic | 2.8% | Information Technology sector | Conductor, 2026 benchmarks |
| AI referral share of site traffic | 1.08% | Average of 10 industries | Conductor, 2026 benchmarks |
| ChatGPT share of AI referrals | 87.4% | 10 industries | Conductor, 2026 benchmarks |
| Searches showing an AI Overview | 25.11% of 21.9M | 10 industries | Conductor, 2026 benchmarks |
| AIO citations also in organic top 10 | ~17% | All tracked queries | BrightEdge, 2025-2026 |

AI Referral Share: Why Software Leads Every Sector
Conductor measured referral traffic from AI platforms across ten industries. The IT sector led at 2.80%, followed by Consumer Staples at 1.91%; Communication Services (0.25%) and Utilities (0.35%) sat at the bottom. Software buyers ask assistants to compare tools, explain integrations and shortlist vendors, which fits the pattern, but the report does not test why. What it does show is scale: even the leading sector gets under 3 visits in 100 from AI.
| Sector | AI referral share of traffic | Rank of 10 | Reading for SaaS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Information Technology | 2.80% | 1 | Closest proxy for B2B SaaS |
| Consumer Staples | 1.91% | 2 | Consumer comparison queries |
| Average, 10 industries | 1.08% | - | Cross-sector baseline |
| Utilities | 0.35% | 9 | Low AI referral use |
| Communication Services | 0.25% | 10 | Lowest measured |

Citation Rates: Who AI Engines Quote on Tech Topics
Conductor also ranked the domains with the highest AI citation market share per sector. For Information Technology the top five were google.com, microsoft.com, sap.com, dell.com and adobe.com. All five publish large documentation, support and product libraries. A mid-market SaaS brand is not competing with peers alone; it is competing with platform owners whose help centres answer the same integration questions.
No study publishes a citation rate for a typical SaaS domain. The usable signal is concentration: answers lean on a small set of deep, frequently updated sources, and the citation share figures Conductor reports for leaders in other sectors sit in single digits, such as NerdWallet at 6.73% of Financials citations.
| Rank | IT-sector domain by AI citation share | Content type it is known for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | google.com | Developer and product documentation |
| 2 | microsoft.com | Learn, support and product docs |
| 3 | sap.com | Enterprise software help and solution pages |
| 4 | dell.com | Hardware and infrastructure support |
| 5 | adobe.com | Product help and experience-cloud content |
Citation Versus Ranking: The 17% Overlap
BrightEdge tracked AI Overviews for more than a year and found that only about 17% of sources cited in AIOs also rank in the organic top 10, a share it describes as flat for months. Over the same period AIO presence rose from roughly 30% to 48% of tracked queries, a 58% increase. For a software company this means page-one rankings and AI citations are two scoreboards. Many cited pages sit outside page one, and many page-one pages are never cited.
Google's own position is that nothing extra is required: its AI features guide states there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." Eligibility still depends on being indexed and snippet-eligible.
CTR Rates When an AI Overview Appears
Click-through data comes from cross-industry studies. Ahrefs analysed 300,000 keywords and found a 34.5% lower top-result CTR when an AI Overview was present (April 2025). Its February 2026 update, run on December 2025 data, measured 58% lower: a forecast position-one CTR of 0.03734 against an actual 0.015677. Pew Research Center tracked 900 US adults in March 2025: users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary in 1% of visits.
| Study | Period | Sample | CTR finding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs AIO study | April 2025 | 300,000 keywords | Top-result CTR 34.5% lower with an AIO |
| Ahrefs AIO update | December 2025 data | 300,000 keywords | Top-result CTR 58% lower with an AIO |
| Pew Research Center | March 2025 | 900 US adults | 8% vs 15% result clicks; 1% in-summary clicks |

Visibility: How Often AI Answers Sit Above the Results
Visibility starts with how often an AI layer appears. Conductor found AI Overviews on 25.11% of 21.9 million searches across its ten industries, with Health Care highest at 48.75% and Real Estate lowest at 4.48%. Conductor does not publish the AIO rate for the IT sector in the summary we opened, so we do not quote one. Google said at I/O 2026 that "AI Overviews now has over 2.5 billion monthly active users." And SparkToro reports that 68.01% of Google searches in the first four months of 2026 ended without a click (Similarweb panel), versus 60.45% in 2024 (Datos panel). The two years come from different clickstream panels, so read the gap as direction rather than a precise delta.
Size matters as much as frequency. BrightEdge reports that when AI Overviews appear they now average over 1,200 pixels tall, which pushes the first organic result below the fold on a standard screen. For a SaaS comparison query, that means the AI summary is often the only thing a buyer reads before deciding whether to scroll. BrightEdge also notes that roughly 52% of queries still show no AI Overview at all, so classic rankings remain the whole experience on about half of searches.
Which AI Assistants Software Buyers Reach
Statcounter measures referral share among AI chatbots. In September 2026, ChatGPT held 80.48% worldwide, Google Gemini 10.91%, Perplexity 5.85%, Microsoft Copilot 1.79% and Claude 0.95%. Conductor's own referral data points the same way, with ChatGPT at 87.4% of AI referrals. These are all-user figures; no source splits chatbot share for B2B software buyers.
| AI assistant | Worldwide share, Sep 2026 | Implication for SaaS content |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 80.48% | Primary answer surface to monitor |
| Google Gemini | 10.91% | Shares signals with Google Search |
| Perplexity | 5.85% | Shows citations prominently |
| Microsoft Copilot | 1.79% | Bing index, Microsoft 365 users |
| Claude | 0.95% | Smaller referral volume |
How Tech Marketers Are Adopting GEO
The CMO Survey 2026 asked how companies use AI in marketing. 41.5% of respondents named Generative Engine Optimization "to get content to appear in AI-generated search results", a new answer option with no Fall 2023 comparison. Content creation led at 73.9%. Tech, software and platform companies reported AI in 36.1% of marketing activity, the highest of any sector, and project 68.4% in three years. Conductor's 2026 CMO investment report found enterprises put an average of 12% of digital budgets into AEO in 2025 and 94% plan to increase it; that sample is enterprise-wide, not SaaS-only.
| Adoption signal | Figure | Sample | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use AI for GEO | 41.5% | US marketers, all sectors | The CMO Survey 2026 |
| Use AI for content creation | 73.9% | US marketers, all sectors | The CMO Survey 2026 |
| AI share of marketing activity, tech firms | 36.1% now, 68.4% projected | Tech/software/platform | The CMO Survey 2026 |
| Digital budget share to AEO, 2025 | 12% | Enterprise CMOs, 500+ staff | Conductor 2026 |
| Plan to increase AEO investment | 94% | Enterprise CMOs, 500+ staff | Conductor 2026 |

What the Research on GEO Tactics Shows
The term GEO comes from Aggarwal et al., published at KDD 2024. Its abstract states that GEO methods "can boost visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses" and that efficacy "varies across domains". That was a controlled benchmark, not a field test on SaaS sites, so it supports testing rather than a forecast.
Turning These Numbers Into a SaaS AEO Scorecard
- Track AI referral sessions as a share of total traffic and compare with the 2.8% IT-sector figure.
- Log which pages are cited in AI Overviews separately from ranking reports, given the 17% overlap.
- Watch top-result CTR on informational terms that trigger an AIO and expect it to diverge from rank.
- Prioritise documentation, integration and comparison pages, the content type that leading IT domains publish.
- Monitor ChatGPT first, given its 80.48% chatbot share, then Gemini and Perplexity.
Where B2B SaaS AEO Data Is Missing
Three numbers SaaS teams ask for do not exist in public research: an AI citation rate for software domains, an AEO click-through rate for software queries, and a cost per lead from AI answers. Vendor dashboards report these for their own customers, but no named study aggregates them for the category. Use the IT-sector cut and cross-industry CTR data above, and build the rest from your own analytics.
Two practical consequences follow. First, any vendor quoting a SaaS AEO conversion or CTR benchmark should be asked for the sample, the period and the method; if those are missing, the figure is a claim rather than a benchmark. Second, the fastest way to get a real number is to segment AI referrers in analytics, tag cited landing pages, and compare their pipeline contribution with organic search over a full quarter.

Frequently Asked Questions
What share of B2B SaaS website traffic comes from AI engines?
No study publishes a SaaS-only figure. The closest cut is Conductor's 2026 benchmark for the Information Technology sector, where AI referrals were 2.8% of total website traffic, the highest of 10 industries and about 2.6 times the 1.08% average. Treat it as a sector proxy for software companies.
Which domains do AI engines cite most for tech queries?
In Conductor's 2026 Information Technology cut, the top five domains by AI citation market share were google.com, microsoft.com, sap.com, dell.com and adobe.com. Large vendors with deep documentation dominate, which is the bar a SaaS brand competes against.
Does ranking first on Google guarantee an AI Overview citation for a software brand?
No. BrightEdge reports that only about 17% of sources cited in AI Overviews also rank in the organic top 10, and that share has been flat for months. Ranking and citation are related but measured separately.
How much does an AI Overview cut click-through rate for a top-ranking page?
Ahrefs found a 34.5% lower top-result CTR in its April 2025 study and a 58% lower CTR when it re-ran the study on December 2025 data, published February 2026. Neither study is cut by industry, so no SaaS-specific AEO CTR exists.
Do SaaS sites need special markup to appear in AI Overviews?
Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.
