Tax apps are seasonal by law: the IRS opened the 2026 filing season on January 26, and by April 24 it had received 142,225,000 individual returns. This page tracks that calendar, the published scale of DIY filing, Finance-category store costs from named vendors and the store rules for financial apps. No source publishes a tax-app download or conversion benchmark, and we do not invent one.

The filing calendar is the demand curve
The IRS filing season statistics page notes that the 2025 season began on January 27, 2025 and the 2026 season on January 26, 2026. Its week ending April 24, 2026 release reports 142,225,000 returns received (down 0.2%), 139,221,000 e-filed (up 1.2%) and 534,164,000 IRS.gov visits, up 59.8% on 334,172,000 a year earlier.
For app marketers this is the most reliable seasonality signal available. Store listings, screenshots and promotional text need to be live before late January, and the refund message matters through spring.
| IRS measure, cumulative to late April | 2025 | 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total returns received | 142,566,000 | 142,225,000 | -0.2% |
| Total e-filed returns | 137,560,000 | 139,221,000 | 1.2% |
| E-filed by tax professionals | 73,460,000 | 73,898,000 | 0.6% |
| E-filed self-prepared | 64,099,000 | 65,323,000 | 1.9% |

Who files on their own, and where apps fit
Self-prepared e-filing grew faster than professional e-filing in 2026 (1.9% against 0.6%), but professionals still filed the larger share, 73,898,000 against 65,323,000. That split matters for ASO: DIY software apps compete for the self-prepared filer, while accounting firms need an app, if at all, for document exchange with clients who already chose a professional.
The two audiences search differently. A self-preparer types a product or a task, such as a software brand, "file taxes" or "refund status", and usually decides within the season. A client of a firm types the firm's name after receiving an invitation email, often once a year. The first is a competitive store auction; the second is a navigational search that a clear app name, a recognisable icon and a direct link from the firm's portal email can win without any keyword budget at all.
Published scale of the leading DIY brand
Intuit's fiscal 2025 results report 39.2 million total US TurboTax units for the season through July 31, 2025, down 2%, with 34.9 million online units (down 1%) and 4.3 million desktop units (down 4%). Intuit attributes the decline to yielding share with lower-revenue customers. It does not break out mobile app installs, so "online" covers browser and app together.
| TurboTax federal units (Intuit) | Season to July 31, 2024 | Season to July 31, 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desktop units | 4.6 million | 4.3 million | -4% |
| Online units | 35.4 million | 34.9 million | -1% |
| Total US TurboTax units | 39.9 million | 39.2 million | -2% |
The government app in the same search results
The IRS publishes its own app. IRS2Go is described as the official app of the IRS, for checking refund status, making a payment and finding tax information. Any tax app that targets "refund status" searches is competing with the agency's own listing, so a private app's product page needs to say plainly what it does that IRS2Go does not.
The same applies to accounting apps that sit beside banking apps from the client's own bank, which also surface in Finance searches. A small firm cannot outrank either on generic terms, and it does not need to: its clients arrive already knowing the name. The listing's job is to confirm, in the first two screenshots, that this is the firm's secure upload and messaging app and not a generic tax tool.
Finance-category costs in the App Store auction
Apple's category definitions list tax among Finance examples, alongside banking, budgets and insurance. That places tax apps in one of the more expensive auctions. MobileAction's 2026 benchmark puts Finance search results cost per tap at USD 2.98 in 2025 (from USD 3.38), and its CPA page puts Finance CPA at USD 5.09 (from USD 5.55). SplitMetrics reports Finance at USD 6.06 per tap and USD 13.28 per acquisition for 2025 across its own client base.
The spread between vendors is large and should be quoted as a range with both names, not averaged. Either way, Finance sits well above MobileAction's all-category CPA of USD 2.51, so a tax app paying for generic searches should expect to pay a premium for every install it buys during the season.
| Finance category, Apple Ads 2025 | Figure | Prior year | Vendor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost per tap | USD 2.98 | USD 3.38 | MobileAction |
| Cost per acquisition | USD 5.09 | USD 5.55 | MobileAction |
| Cost per tap | USD 6.06 | Not stated | SplitMetrics |
| Cost per acquisition | USD 13.28 | Not stated | SplitMetrics |
| All-category CPA, for comparison | USD 2.51 | USD 2.76 | MobileAction |
Seasonal cost swings in the store auction
Cost seasonality in Apple Ads does not follow the tax calendar neatly. Across all categories, MobileAction reports CPA of USD 2.12 in Q1 and USD 2.11 in Q2 2025, rising to USD 2.53 in Q3 and USD 3.28 in Q4. SplitMetrics identifies September as the combined cost peak and April as the most cost-efficient window of 2025. Both are cross-category patterns, but they suggest filing season falls in the cheaper half of the year for store ads.

Store reach at the start of the season
Apple's 2025 Transparency Report counts 892,670,823 average weekly visitors and 463,575,966 weekly searching accounts across all apps, and Apple Ads says almost 65% of downloads happen directly after a search. These are year-round, all-category averages; Apple does not publish a weekly curve, so the filing-season bump in tax searches cannot be read from store data.
What can be read is the device mix. Statcounter puts US mobile share at 60.68% iOS and 39.29% Android in August 2026, so a tax app that only tests creative on the App Store is ignoring close to two in five phones during the busiest weeks.
| Reach measure | Figure | Period | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly App Store visitors | 892,670,823 | 2025 average | Apple Transparency Report |
| Weekly searching accounts | 463,575,966 | 2025 average | Apple Transparency Report |
| Downloads right after a search | Almost 65% | Current page | Apple Ads |
| US mobile share, iOS | 60.68% | August 2026 | Statcounter |
| US mobile share, Android | 39.29% | August 2026 | Statcounter |
Refund timing shapes the listing message
The same IRS release counts 95,743,000 refunds worth USD 312.882 billion by April 24, 2026, with 96,059,000 direct deposit refunds processed (that count includes prior-year returns). The average refund rose 11.0% to USD 3,268. For a DIY tax app, the refund and direct deposit are the benefit a searcher is looking for in February; for an accounting firm's client app, the equivalent message is secure document upload and status updates. Circular 230 still applies to how either promise is worded, so "fast refund" copy should describe the process, not guarantee a date.
Store rules for financial and tax apps
Apple's guideline 5.1.1(ix) says apps providing services in highly regulated fields, including banking and financial services, should be submitted by a legal entity that provides the services, not an individual developer. On Android, the Financial features declaration must be completed by all developers with a published app, even those with no financial features, and lists categories such as financial advice and credit monitoring.
Advertising by tax practitioners has its own rule. Circular 230, 31 CFR 10.30, bars practitioners from any public communication containing a false, fraudulent, coercive, misleading or deceptive claim, and bars enrolled agents from using the term "certified". App store text is public communication.
| Rule | Issuer | What it requires | Listing consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guideline 5.1.1(ix) | Apple | Legal entity submits regulated financial services apps | Publish under the firm, not a person |
| Financial features declaration | Google Play | Every published app declares features | File before release |
| 31 CFR 10.30 | US Treasury / IRS | No false or misleading claims | Refund promises need care |
| Finance category definition | Apple | Tax listed under Finance | Expect a pricier auction |
Conversion context without a tax benchmark
AppTweak's 2025 benchmarks give an all-category US App Store conversion rate of 8.56% and 16.15% on Google Play. On the page we opened there was no Finance or tax figure, so we do not provide one. Measure your own seasonal baseline: compare the product page conversion rate in February with the one in October, because the searcher in February is ready to file. A drop in conversion in the off-season is expected and is not a reason to rewrite the listing; a drop in February against the prior February is. Keep a year-on-year view of the same weeks rather than a month-on-month one, which on a seasonal app will always look alarming in May.
A filing-season ASO calendar
- December: finalise screenshots and test them with product page optimization, which allows up to three treatments.
- Before the late-January opening: publish the season's promotional text and in-app events.
- February to April: lead with refund, e-file and document-upload features.
- April: the most cost-efficient Apple Ads month in SplitMetrics' 2025 data.
- May onward: switch the listing to extensions, amended returns and year-round features.
- Q4: expect the highest store ad costs; protect brand terms only.

Frequently Asked Questions
When do tax app downloads peak?
No public source publishes tax app download counts by week, so we do not quote one. The IRS filing calendar is the reliable proxy: the 2026 season opened on January 26 and, by April 24, the IRS had received 142,225,000 individual returns, including 65,323,000 e-filed self-prepared returns. Listing updates belong before the season opens, not after it.
How big is the DIY tax app audience?
Intuit reported 39.2 million total US TurboTax units for the season through July 31, 2025, of which 34.9 million were online units, down 1% year on year. The IRS counted 65,323,000 self-prepared e-filed returns in 2026 through April 24, up 1.9%. These cover web and app filing together; neither source splits out app installs.
What does App Store advertising cost for Finance apps?
Vendor data only. MobileAction measured a Finance search results CPT of USD 2.98 and CPA of USD 5.09 in 2025, down from USD 3.38 and USD 5.55 in 2024. SplitMetrics reported Finance at USD 6.06 per tap and USD 13.28 per acquisition across its client base. The two vendors measure different accounts, so quote each with its source.
Which store rules apply to a tax or accounting app?
Apple lists tax under the Finance category and, in guideline 5.1.1(ix), asks that apps offering financial services be submitted by a legal entity that provides them. Google Play requires every published app to complete its Financial features declaration. Tax professionals who advertise are also bound by Circular 230, section 10.30, which bars false or misleading claims.
Does a local accounting firm need its own app?
Rarely. Individual firms usually meet clients through search, referrals and a client portal. The App Store is dominated by national DIY software, the IRS's own IRS2Go app and banking apps. A firm-branded app makes sense when it replaces a document portal clients already use every season.
