Understanding SEO: The Complete Guide

More than half of Internet users click on the first links that appear in search results offered by engines like Google. Less than 20% go to the second page. A website should therefore ideally be present on the first page of the Search Engine Result Page (SERP) to obtain maximum visits and optimize conversions, that is, to convert the most Internet users into prospects and then into customers. This is where SEO, an acronym for Search Engine Optimization, comes in.

What is SEO?

SEO is a set of techniques designed to improve a website's ranking on Google's search engine. Also known as "organic referencing," applying this method increases the chances of appearing among the top results offered by the search engine when a user enters one or more keywords. The goal is to satisfy the demands of Google's bots, which constantly analyze the web, in order to gain greater visibility.

How does SEO work?

SEO is based on three fundamental pillars: technique, content, and links. Let's take a look.

1- The technique

The first pillar of SEO concerns the technical aspect of the site, that is, how it was designed. The codes and tags used, for example, must be of good quality and efficient. The platform's speed, fluidity, ergonomics, design, and responsiveness are also taken into account by Google bots.

2- The content

It is essential to write content that is interesting for readers, of quality and optimized to appear in the first Google search results.

  • You then need to insert keywords, revolving around the topic discussed, previously determined by an SEO expert.
  • Titles and meta descriptions (small descriptions appearing below a site's address and link in the SERP) must also be impactful in order to encourage Internet users to open the website.
  • It is also essential to use vocabulary and tones adapted to the target audience.
  • Finally, articles must be easy to read and understand. In other words, sentences and paragraphs should not be too long, and it's even recommended to include a few photos or videos.

3- The links

Finally, SEO includes the use of 2 types of links:

  • Internal links that lead to another page of the site to facilitate reading, but above all so that the reader stays longer on the platform and discovers other articles that might interest them.
  • External links to prove the credibility of the website and to redirect readers to it.
